You've left town—ditching your old, miserable life—hoping to start a new life for yourself. You've given yourself a new name, fake background and style. Write about your first encounter in your new town.
Jimmy buried himself further into his warm jacket to shield off the rain. It was so cold and windy the rain felt like needles biting in to his skin. He hiked his bag further up his shoulder trudging on. He couldn't take it anymore. He had to get away from people who believed he was a freak! He was sick of the names and the beatings.
He could barely make out the flashing lights of a small diner gas station up ahead through the pouring rain. He continued walking towards it using it as a guiding light. As he got closer he could make out the smells of food making his stomach rumble loudly. Jimmy couldnt even remember his last meal. He shoved his hands in his pockets scrambling up a few dollars for some food. A bell rang out loudly as he entered the diner. A plump older lady looked up from her book.
"Well, hello there honey." She got up grabbing a menu walking over to him. "Come on in lets get you warmed up and dry. Jeez its pouring out there!" He nodded smiling softly as she led him to his seat. Jimmy sat down looking at the menu.
"Um, what can i get for about four dollars and seventy eight cents?…" he asked softly counting his money. The waitress smiled at him sadly.
"Don't worry sweetie its on the house. What can i get for you?"
"No i couldn't possibly…." he began but she cut him off.
"Dont offend me sugar order anything you want."
"Can i have a coffee and the ruben?" he mumbled. She nodded writing it down.
"Coming right up." she smiled disappearing into the kitchen. Jimmy wrapped his arm around himself in an attempt to warm himself up. He closed his eyes for a few minutes enjoying the smells of the diner. The waitress came back a few minutes later serving me the food.
"Here we are!" she said cheerfully setting the food down infront of him. He smiled gratefully and began eating. "So where are you from?"
"Um I'm just from the next town over. Schools out i figured id come visit my friends up here." Jimmy said, he was lying of course. He was from New York he hitched hike all the way across the country. This town seemed like a nice place to start over it seemed unlikely that news from New York would make it here.
"Thats nice, Im Jamie whats your name honey?" Jimmy finished his sandwich wiping his mouth trying to think of a name quickly.
"I'm Lyle." he answered calmly. She smiled, picking up his dirty dishes.
"Well come visit me sometime soon sugar." he nodded smiling as she walked back to the kitchen with his dishes. He set the four dollars on the table as a tip and headed for the door. Yes this seemed like a very nice place to start over.
