Newts are able to regenerate (make) new limbs, eyes and spines. The cells at the injury can de-differentiate, reproduce rapidly, and differentiate again to create a new limb or organ. Many newst make toxins to help defend themselves from predators.
HANDLING: YOU SHOULD NOT TOUCH YOUR NEWTS. HUMAN SKIN IS TOXIC. IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO TOUCH THEM, WASH YOUR HANDS WITH WARM WATER AND SOAP BUT MAKE SURE THERE IS NO SOAP LEFT ON YOUR HANDS.
Development: Newts can take almost seven years until they have reached sexual maturity. Their main breeding time is February to June. They starts off as tadpoles, like frogs (after they hatch from their egg) They go through metamorphosis and leave the water on a regular basis. When they become adults they are rarely on land, and spend almost all their time in the water
