I dug out Don Patterson's 'The Book of Shadows' again.
It's a bit hard to miss, really, it's half as thick again with post-it notes...
It's a book of aphorisms, such as:
'The black book is a greater horror than the blank book.
One can still write in a blank book.'
The writing itself cleaves the air with the gaze of the poet, but it is helped so much by the physicality of the book itself, the thick paper, the dark cover.
Or maybe it is not aided, but put in visual context...?
