Ashiya Mizuki, a Japanese American, transferred to a boarding school in Japan to meet her high jump idol, Sano Izumi. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Did we mention that the school is an all-boys school, and she's pretending to be a boy while she's there?

Ashiya Mizuki | Born May 7 | Age 17 | Type O | Daisy
Yup, she's the heroine of the entire manga. To get close to her track idol, Sano, Mizuki hid her gender and transferred (From America to Japan. This girl is obsessed.) to his all-boys' school where she is his classmate and roommate. Her thin figure kind of ruins her disguise though. ^^; She was shocked once she heard Sano quit high-jumping, but inspired him to continue the sport. (how cute!) She's energetic and quite athletic herself. Barely anything brings her down and she defends what she believes is right, especially in volume 8 where she spontaneously kicked the door to get in Kitahama-sensei's face. (OH YEAH! XD wink

Izumi Sano | Born December 24 | Age 17 | Type O | Calla Lily
Sano is the sole reason why Mizuki traveled to Japan. He's strong, athletic, handsome, and inevitably the best high-jumper in the school. He discovers Mizuki's real gender in the first volume (XD) when he picked her up to take her to the doctor's office. Ever since then, he has kept his lips zipped and tried to protect her and keep her secret from getting out. He loves baths. He can't hold his liquor for crap, but if you want to get a little kiss from him, then drown him in alcohol. XD

Nakatsu Shuichi | Born August 20 | Age 17 |Type B | Sunflower
He's the main comic-relief in the manga, and he's hilarious! He's loud and impulsive, and some could say he's an idiot, but he really does mean well. ^^; His bleached hair usually makes people think bad things about him. He's in the same class and dorm as Mizuki and Sano. Things get a bit tough for him once he admits to himself that he has feelings for Mizuki even though he is a guy, but he doesn't know Mizuki is actually a girl. So, what will happen if and when he finds out? ;3

Nanba Minami | Born June 5 | Age 18 | Type A | Orchid
He's Mizuki's sempai and RA of Mizuki's dorm. He's often found hitting on other girls and acting carefree, but he can get dead serious when the situation calls for it. The reader can see how melancholy he is when he thinks about a serious, past relationship. Occasionally, he leans on Mizuki for comfort. (Awww... ) Family-wise, he is Umeda's nephew and Rio is his aunt.

Umeda Hokuto | Born October 31 | Age 26 | Type O | Anthurium
Umeda is the school's doctor, and he seems to take advantage of his placement because whenever Mizuki steps in the office, she finds him in a suggestive position with another cute student. Yes, he's gay. However, he's picky with his lovers. He immediately finds out about Mizuki's secret, but keeps it. Consequently, she goes to him whenever she needs help or advice which sometimes annoys him. ^^;

Julia is Mizuki's best friend from America and another one who knows about Mizuki's secret. She's was a bit worried about it at first, but fully supported her. She even cut Mizuki's hair. She pops up in Japan later, and comes up with a few plans that get a bit confusing, but she totally means well. She's a perfect friend. ^^

Shizuki | Born ? | Age ? | Type ? | Flower ?
You immediately learn that he's a homophobe, but before that, you learn that he's Mizuki older brother. He's attending college and majoring in the medical field. He's quite protective of her, and he loves her a lot. (: Not incest, though. Whew. Anyways, he tried to get Mizuki to return to America after learning she tranferred to an all boys school, but failed. He still supports her though. ^^ (Not much information about him.)

Masao Himejima | Born September 9 | Age 18 (?) | Type AB | Flower Rose
He calls himself Oscar M. Himejima, has flowing long hair, hates ugly things, likes fencing, and is the leader of dorm 3. He first appears in volume 4.

Kayashima Daiki | Born ? | Age 17 | Type ? | Flower ?
You don't see him doing much of athletics like most of the characters, but you always see him freaking people out with aura readings and his tellings of seeing ghosts. He is also Nakatsu's roommate. o_o In the school festival, he had a photo booth that would reveal spirits around your image. He's quiet, mysterious, and emotionless most of the time.

Yujiro | Born ? | Age ? He's a dog. | Type ? (Do dogs have blood types? | Flower ?
He's a dog that Sano took in one day because he saw it resisting to go to the pound. The family that previously took care of him was no longer able to keep him because the mother remarried and the husband didn't like/was allergic to dogs. He seems to be having a great time with Sano and Mizuki.

Sano and Mizuki's classmates. They appear often to hang out with the gang.

There are a total of 23 volumes, all of which are released in Japan. Currently, only 9 volumes are released in the US.

Hana to Yume (Flowers and Dreams) is monthly (?) shoujo anthology published by Hakusensha, who brought you Fruits Basket. It's cover price is 270 yen, making it one of the cheapest phonebook-style anthologies out there.

Before the tankouban was released, Hana Kimi made its debut in Hana to Yume back in 1997. Often, the issues include many cute freebies such as stationary and drama CDs, which are skits that use the manga's characters and are performed by voice actors. In fact, Hana Kimi has been used in several drama CDs (refer to the extra pages in volume cool .

Note: The anthology doesn't have the side-bars where Nakajou-sensei writes about random nonsense. The anthology is only available in Japanese.
