Glyph felt good about having finally approached Xun with his request for friendship. He was still tentative and worried, but there was opportunity there he would not easily forgo. It had set him to thinking, however, about love and friends in general… Illisia had been an unexpected and most welcome exception. The Elf had a fire about her that was present even in Xun now… but she was not the first he’d come to care for.

It made him wonder if there was, perhaps, some facet of Malh’reth he hadn’t fully understood when the mage had fallen in with Greed. That facet resided within him now, however weak, and it warranted attention. Had Mal ever loved Phaedra? On some level… yes, but it had been buried beneath adoration and awe for the Goddess who wielded such power that it ensnared mortals and held them close to her. It was this influence that he had blamed for Malh’reth’s ensarement but now that he thought about it… the mage had cared, at least a little, for the woman. And he knew, too, that Phaedra disliked him for his taking of her plaything…. And while it was slightly different then his situation with Xun, it came down to essentially identical occurrences. Malh’reth had had things he needed, that filled him up and made him whole one more, he did not feel sorry for doing that and could not blame Xun for doing the exact same thing.

But it also begged the question: Did Phaedra miss Malh’reth? Had she cared the mortal beyond simple manipulation and exaltation? Glyph was more inclined to say no in her case. Greed collected… if there was more, he had not been privy to such pleasantries, or had looked for the golden hook in each. He wrinkled his nose, unable to pull his bias from his reflection – he did not like Greed and no matter how much he tried to reason out her actions or give her a chance, he talked himself in circles to arrive right back at his starting point: Phaedra was not to be trusted.

He was certain that she would find fellowship in the other aspects of Destruction – Famine, Greed and Plague would likely all get along, siblings of strife as they were. Famine and Plague he understood… they played a role in the cycles of life and death but Greed… Greed, like Judgement and Science, were outside of his interests. Judgement and Science looked over society, touched upon mortals directly… and he, he was a force to be understood. It might be arrogance, he decided, or pride, but the forces of Creation and nature did not fall into remotely the same category as those that governed societies… and if he was honest, he cared little about the laws of society. He was neither good nor evil, as far as he was concerned.

And then, beyond Phaedra and Xun there was Adrienne, dear innocent Adrienne. He would admit freely that he loved the young werewolf and her enthusiastic approach to everything she encountered. His discussion with the protective and inquisitive Rio had been illuminating… he had been earnest in his praise of the girl. Her efforts to become a druid were honest and she was making great progress – it made him feel his limitations all that more keenly, however, to see her flower beginning to bloom while his own influence had yet to fill the cup he currently possessed. She was devoted and held potential, certainly, and he was indeed protective of her, he suspected, in similar ways to how Rio felt. She’d mentioned a few times wishing to become his follower and he wanted to pursue that avenue… be he knew little of the making of Aoide, could remember very little.

As it stood , he would not elevate her quite yet. Adrienne needed more experience and more education, which he wanted to provide personally when he was able.

He hoped his Aoide would welcome the werewolf with open arms. They were devoted but they were also sharp at times, badgering him into line and making sure he kept himself fed. They were another group he loved, but again, he loved them as a benefactor might. If they had been his from before the Fading, he was not certain… Aelondrael had seemed content enough to fall in with him, but he’d been of the opinion the demonesses had somehow weathered the Ages and brought him to his Host. Ever grateful for this, they held a special place in his heart.

The mortals he’d gathered to his arms, too, were appreciated but as Subjects rather than equals – he would not deny that he enjoyed the treatment due a God but found, for now at least, that approaching the mortals as humble and equal had garnered more attention and fostered more faith in him as a person that he could cultivate into worship. Indeed, the Wardens he’d appointed would be that pet project, his first new cult… but he needed to be more then what he was.

The love he felt for them or for the Aoide, however, was very different from the nervous, joyful anxiety of being near to Illisia and the dread that had rolled through him in pulling himself to face Xun… And it was this distinction that he used to differentiate love from friendship. Even now, Glyph would stand alongside for Xun on principle – he was a Dragon King and a fellow deity, that alone was enough to garner his cooperation at least for now. He was curious, too, to learn of the God… they had spoken little before he’d taken Illisia and while it had been a definite gesture of respect, it also meant he was now hamstrung in dealings with Xun.

He sighed as he rose and stretched, scratch his head as he pursed his lips. The most he could do, really, was to start over with Xun, to try to find friendship with him and learn of him…. It would require tucking away the parts of him that yet loved Illisia and the thought hurt, as if it was some kind of betrayal. Glyph shook his head and looked out over the meadow he’d been meditating in and smiled. He would not lose her completely, not so long as he remembered her… and cherished that memory. Xun was a new being, different in ways he did not yet know, and deserved to be treated as a separate being, approached as an equal rather than a lover… and that would require patience on his part as the Dragon King sorted himself out.

Yes, that is what he would do – he would start anew and remind himself that Xun Jiang was not Illisia Shadowmoon until he accepted it.

Summary: Glyph and Two have a conversation about what a Gem is and what accepting one means. It is heavy material for Two, a former servant, and Glyph wrestles with the idea of sacrificing a mortal for 'the greater good' even if such sacrifice returns a force of life to the world.
