The Rukongai consists of 80 circular areas that surround the Court of Pure Souls on all sides. In general terms, Rukongai would be the suburbs and the slums to the Court's shining city. Each of the 80 Districts is numbered in order as you move further and further away from the Seireitei. The district nearest to the Court would then be District 1, which enjoys the highest quality of living in Rukongai. The next nearest would be District 2, and so on, until at last you reach District 80, which suffers through the lowest quality of living available.
Rukongai is a home to lost peoples and the un-dead whose souls are free from sin. These souls, unable to pass on, are granted passage into Seireitei where they are cared for and watched over by the Shinigami of the Protection Squads.
No matter where you go in Rukongai, however, you can almost always find a few things...bars, people, and fighting. Even those in the first District are not entirely free from the worries of normal folk, but it pales in comparison to the Hell that is the 80th District. On a lighter note, there is almost always something entertaining to find in Rukongai, whether it be hunting down one of Kuukaku Shiba's newest (and craziest) home models, playing a game of soccer with the kids, or drinking away your troubles at a friendly bar.
If you're looking from time away from the "Work-work-work!" lifestyle of the shinigami, then a trip to Rukongai could be just the ticket!

"I am the terror that stalks in the night, I am the cold chill that crawls up evil's spine. I am the only thing between our world and total ruin...I am...AAAHHH!" Ryo shouted as he suddenly lost his footing on the roof of the building, and went plummeting down to the earth of the 75th district face first.
"Ow...gotta...get...up...terror and all that..." Ryo said, rubbing his head and standing. As his eyes re-focused, however, he noticed a bunch of armed men around him. "Aww...you guys are back AGAIN? Dudes, I gave you like, 50 bucks! Can't you just take the money and leave it at that? I like my shirt, pants, and you know...LIFE..." Ryo commented, looking around them. They didn't have any spirit pressure, and he didn't wanna fight them...

Moments before the group begins beating the hapless hero down, theme music fills the air as the amazing Dr. Alphonse Gheis appears on the scene. "Ah... a most amusing specimen we have here, right my dear?" The Good Doctor laughs lightly, commenting to a female shinigami at his side, who anxiously nods her head, absolutely devouring his words.
"Yes Doctor, of course, Doctor!" She chirps. She was obviously infatuated with the Doctor, her eyes all a sparkle as she watches him walk towards the group. Given her super model looks, it's a wonder how she could be attracted to someone as book-wormish as Dr. Gheis. "Be careful, Doctor!" She calls after him.
Smiling, the Good Doctor merely waves her concern off and slips his hands into his pockets as he leisurely strolls up on the group, his eyes concealed by light glinting off of his glasses. His short, reddish-blond hair waves in the breeze as he smiles at the group who'd now turned to face him. "What disgusting faces you plusses have, my my my... grotesque indeed. It's a marvel you can even stand to look at yourself in the mirror, hahaha. And no spiritual pressure at all... such a shame, such a shame... truly what pathetic wastes of space you bunch are. No worth what-so-ever." Provoked by his words one of the plusses lets out a stream of curses and takes a swing at the Good Doctor who laughs and ducks below the arm easily, his hands still in his pockets. As the thug loses his balance, having put all of his force into the punch, Gheis chuckles and raises up quickly placing a shoulder in the thug's chin then quickly knees the thug in the stomach, pushing him backwards before finishing with a kick to the thug's chest, knocking him into the group. Cocking his head to the side, he repeats, "Such a shame."

"Heeey...don't beat 'em up that bad, Doc! They probably just needed some food or something, riiigghhtt?" Ryo looked at the other thugs, puzzled and angry as their attention was split between the two.
"And that is no way for a captain of the Sereitei to act! You should at least give the guy a cookie or something...sheesh, you big meany." Ryo quipped, watching the guy stand up. At this time, however, many of the thugs began to recoil as they realized who the new comer was- and probably, who the one they had threatened was. A thousand souls with no spirit power could barely harm an unranked shinigami, and these guys were Captain's...?

The Good Doctor looks from the still unsteady thug to Ryo, still smiling. "But it's so much fun insulting these back water Plusses. Don't worry, I'll only rough them up a little, of course. None of them are even worth experimentation and I doubt they could even set off one of my little sappers. Such a waste, honestly. Well, if you're done embarrassing yourself, then I suggest you make your way to the Seireitei before someone actually does come and kick your a**." Turning, Dr. Gheis strolls back in the direction he'd come from, calling after his assistant, "Come, my dear, we have much work to do."
Turning quickly, the girl races after the Good Doctor, shouting, "Yes Doctor! Coming Doctor!"

The way the "Good" Doctor dismissed the men around him as lower than them upset Ryo highly, and he let out a deep sigh as he folded his arms. "There's something about that man...oh, you guys!" Ryo suddenly noticed, looking at the thugs still around him. "Well, we gotta do something...Oh, I know! You guys can take care of this, can't ya?" Ryo said, throwing a rope at one of their heads. They instantly looked a bit dumbfounded, understanding that he probably wanted them to tie themselves up.
"What th-? Don't look at me like that! You're coming back to the Sereitei for a big ol' dinner and a lecture, and they won't just let you WALK in. Hey-hey! It's your fault...I'd let you go now, but this is serious and you need to learn your lesson." Ryo scolded the mortified thugs, who were unsure whether to laugh at or fear this strange man. "Oh, and you can keep the fifty. I've got LOTS more money back in my place...I make a point of forwarding it to starving children, or donating to the Shinigami Academy, or a lot of other things, but MAN there's just so much of it..." Ryo sighed, but meanwhile the thugs were assured. This was an idiot.

Now some distance away, Dr. Gheis turns around and shouts back to the White Knight, "Oh, One more thing!!" With blinding speed, the Good Doctor launches several surgical darts which hit each of the thugs, narrowly avoiding Ryo, and cause them all to drop as if shot. Still smiling, he adds, "Never show mercy, it's a sign of weakness some of the other Captains won't approve of!" Turning again, Gheis starts to walk away once more, the lady Shinigami in tow.

"What's that Dice?" Ryo turned, stepping directly into the path of the first dart. With his 'cat-like' reflexes, the Captain instantly reacted to the incoming object...and dodged it directly into the other darts. "Hey, these seem kind...of familiar...pinky mantalo..." And with that, Ryo dropped to the ground, unconcious.
The thugs stood there stunned, as one of their members fainted too. "Should we kill 'im?" One of them questioned, looking at Ryo.
"I say we hang 'em, then kill 'em." Said another, crazy mexican.
"I say we set him on fire, then hang him, then kill him." Said another, grinning.
"I think we should leave him be. He's a pretty nice guy." One threw in, and they all looked at him shocked...but, after a minute of deliberation, they all kinda agreed and left, although they made sure to strip him to his boxers and take the money, along with drawing a funny marker mustache on him for the stupid poses he struck earlier.
Moments later, as fate would have it, the long lost boys of the Dork Patrol arrived on scene, attempting to revive their paper with a fresh new look for their Dork of the Year. Seeing the fainted captain in his heart shaped boxers, face scribbled on with marker, they knew what they had just discovered...and with one Kodak moment, history was made once more.

A huddled mass of black robes lay shiftless in the middle of the 80th district, apparently appearing out of nowhere. Within the mass a body slowly stirs and shifts, revealing a tan hand free of scars, cuts, or any of the troubles of a hard life. A slight groan emphasizes the attention on this mass from a nearby group of thugs just making their way to their next shake-down.
"What 'ave we got here, eh?" A large, rather plump thug with a bulbous nose exclaims to the others surrounding him. Wearing a torn Gi with obvious wear from years of use, or disuse, made apparent by several smears of what may have once been palatable food and a rusty sword in a chipped hilt.
The mass shifts a little more, robe sleeves slide downward a bit to reveal a mass of very light blue, almost silvery hair and a flawless face which some would consider beautiful even if it belonged to a man. The black robed man groans again, waking up slowly. His flawless hand moves to clutch his forehead as if he had a headache.
The large man lets out a hearty laugh and retorts, "Lookie here, we got ourselves a prettyboy! Ain't that right, Spike?" The man referred to, Spike, was a very thin, not very intelligent looking individual who wore only a pair of scruffy pants and had a dirty mohawk which may have once resembled spikes. "Uh huh, Boss... and I like me some purty boys, they squeals good!"
An eye on that flawless face squints open, revealing a brilliant green iris which stares up at what it can only make out in the light as a series of shadows. The man in black robes slowly shifts to a sitting position and looks around confused, his light blue hair falling over his face, revealing only that one eye and concealing the other. "I-I'm alive....?" He mutters, his voice surprisingly deep given his 'prettyboy' looks.
'Spike' laughs horsely and replies to the confused man, "Not for long, yuppie! We's gonna fix you up real good-like!" With that the group surrounds the man and edges closer and closer, emanating various snickers and derisive chuckles.
His eyes now focused, the man looks around him and growls, his eyes narrowed dangerously. In an instant he's standing in a very low, wide stance with his hands on the hilt and sheath of a katana, not just any katana by the looks of it, a Zanpaktou. But before the group can realize their error, he draws back and unleashes the sword's power on them all in one arcing swing, that emits a blinding flash and a rain of crimson onto the surrounding walls of the alley. As quickly as it had appeared, the blade had simply vanished, back into the sheath. Standing to a more relaxed posture, the man looks down at himself, at his hands, and at his sword, nothing was the same as before, not even his body felt the same. "What the hell?"

"So the doctor has once again worked in mysterious ways, hm? Well, it makes no difference to me...I will escort you to Soul Society, as ordered." Byakuya walked down the road, revealing himself to Gustav.
Not waiting for a reply, he stopped and continued speaking. "You have died, but due to the intervention of Gheis you were given a temporary soul, which became your own. As such, you became a shinigami upon death and now are excepted into the true Court of Pure Souls. We must hurry if we are not to be late." Byakuya spoke quietly, turning as swiftly as he had come to leave. His expression, which hadn't changed the whole time, thus didn't show his slight surprise at the new arrival. He silently wondered what else Gheis might have secretly done behind the Sereitei's back.

As Gustav began to ponder on these things, he realized that Captain Kuchiki was quickly leaving him in the dust. Quickly stepping to catch up, Gustav felt further proof of his life after death existence, his body was lighter than ever. Though doubtful of Gheis' ability to produce a soul, Gustav had to take it at Byakuya's word, how else could he still exist after being blown away like that? This train of thought now led him down a different path, a path to the end of his mortal life in Aron, was that woman really Sylveril? He couldn't be sure, her form was more angelic than before but her eyes, her hair, her lips, they were all the same, could it be that she came back? No... she couldn't have, he had watched her die. No answers would come to him to explain what he had seen, only the Zanpaktou at his side would offer it's answer in quiet resonance, awaiting him to hear it's voice but knowing he had to first realize it was there.

"One more thing, which I have decided upon due to our current situation against the approaching war with the Espada. I will ask for you to be immediately transfered to my division. This decision, if approved by Commander-General Ukitake, will be final. I trust you have no objections." Byakuya had not asked a question, he had told him what he would make sure did happen. Although the captain's facade hid it well, he felt responsible for failing to protect D'Alkirk and Gustav and he intended to make sure he never failed Meridon again, even if he had to keep him under his personal observation constantly during his life in Soul Society.

Remembering his place and his standing in this army of supernatural beings, Gustav quickly straightens up and barks an automatic, "Sir!" Though his mind still echoed with thoughts of Sylveril, he would have to wait to discover why she had appeared until he had been completely briefed on the situation. Following Captain Kuchiki through the Rukongai seemed to take forever, possibly because of the silence for the most part and something had been itching the back of Gustav's throat. Looking over at Captain Kuchiki through his one visible eye, the young warrior asked, "Sir...? What happened to Kyle? Did he survive the attack?" He had to know if his sacrifice was in vein or not.

When Jidanbo saw the green-clad young man return from the 4th Division with the Captain in tow, the large gatekeeper opened the portal without hesitation. Smiling at the sight of his young friend beyond Jidanbo's massive leg, Silabus turned back to the girl at his side.
"Oh, you'll see when you meet him," he laughed a little, before waving his hand and calling out to his friend. "Hey, Gaspard! I'm back, and I brought you the best healer in the Seireitei!" Upon hearing the voice of his friend, the little pink man's wails turned into a quieter batch of sniffles and sobs while his large, white-gloved hands trailed painfully over his small, thin leg. "S-silabus...thank goodness!" the cute little beast-boy sniffed, glancing up at the girl at his side gratefully with great bit tears hanging pathetically in the corner of his eyes. "I t-thought I was g-g-gonna die from the pain!"When the two came within a few feet of him, Silabus knelt next to his younger friend and rubbed his back in a gentle, friendly manner. He offered the boy a proud smile.
"You did a great job to hang in there, buddy," the brunette assured him, motioning to Maigo to join him at his side. "You've really gotten a lot stronger, Gaspard...I'm proud of you. Now don't worry, she's going to take care of your leg in no time...right Miss Kokoro?"
