The 13 Protection Squads (Gotei 13)
"The 13 Protection Squads are the 13 groups of Shinigami whose job is to protect the world from evil spirits and forces, and bring peace to the dead. The Gotei 13 are dispatched all over the world for protection and also must be on call to protect their home in the event that an invasion takes place. Skilled in the art of hand-to-hand combat, advanced weaponry, and kido magics, to excel as a Shinigami one must truly be an incredible warrior.
Listed below are the 13 Divisions and their Captain, Lieutenant, ranked officers, and unranked members. Also, assignments will be posted next to the name in the event they are not currently present in Soul Society."

1st Division
Captain: Jyuushirou Ukitake
As commander of the first division, Captain Ukitake is also the Commander-General of all Soul Society. His duties include presiding over all meetings between captains, making decisions as to the future of the Seireitei, and commanding the entirety of the Gotei 13's armies. Traditionally, this seat is reserved for the most powerful and longest-standing member of the Gotei 13.

Lieutenant: Shyuuhei Hisagi
As lieutenant of the 1st Division, Hisagi serves as the right hand of the Commander-General. One of the most powerful and longest-standing of the Vice-Captains, Shyuuhei is (in spite of his rough appearance) a very serious and reliable warrior. Though offered a captain's position in the Seireitei before, Hisagi declined the offer by saying he wished to hone his skills a while longer and that he would rather be put to better use in battle. On a lighter note, he is 1/2 of one of the Soul Society's hottest rumors along with 4th Division Lieutenant Isane Kotetsu.
3rd Seat: Kiyone Kotetsu
A vibrant young woman who is desperate for the approval of her captain, Kiyone fights constantly with the Division's 4th Seat Officer Sentarou Kotsubaki over who is more respectful and caring towards their captain. This debate has sparked a rivalry between them which, much to the captain's chagrin, has carried over even into their everyday duties. As the personal guard to their captain, Kiyone and Sentarou are often seen wherever their captain goes (even if he tells them he wishes to be alone) and take care of all the more menial tasks of their division.

4th Seat: Sentarou Kotsubaki
An energetic young man with no tolerance for alcohol, Sentarou fights constantly with the Division's 3rd Seat Officer Kiyone Kotetsu over who is more respectful and caring towards their captain. 2nd Division
Captain: Zeo Zaggart
Commander of the 2nd Division and the only known master of the Blue Dragon Fist Martial Art, Zeo is also charged with leading the Special Task and Reconnaissance Unit. More specifically, espionage and assassination missions fall within his domain, and that of his elite force. Also known to be the Seireitei's foremost pervert, his obvious crush on Lieutenant Kisaragi is surprisingly his only shortcoming as a commander.
Status: Assigned to the protection of the Resistance Capital Meribia
Lieutenant: Yuffie Kisaragi
As Lieutenant of the 2nd Division and the Covert-Ops squad lead by Zeo, Yuffie handles the training and organization of the members of the force and division. A respected and powerful martial artist in her own right, she is often tasked with reconnaissance missions in Zeo's stead, given that she has no discernible weaknesses (other than ships).

5th Seat: Mizuiro Kojima
A promising young martial artist with great ambition, Mizuiro is Yuffie's prized student and a capable 5th Seat in the 2nd Division. While small and not very menacing at first glance, his innocent demeanor belies his skill and maturity. Standing as the near-polar opposite of Zeo in personality, he is known to be infatuated with older women (particularly Yuffie) and to treat them very well.

4th Division
Captain: Maigo Kokoro
A hanyou with healing powers unlike any other in the known world, Maigo Kokoro is the newest captain of the 4th Division (Medical and Supply Relief Division) and perhaps the foremost healer in all Gaia. Originally brought to Seireitei for her own protection, she has since found her niche in the war against evil tending to the wounded of Soul Society. The Magic Emperor himself seems to be personally interested in procuring Maigo, adding further intrigue to the innocent young woman.
Status: Currently assigned to tending the sick and wounded in Soul Society
Lieutenant: Isane Kotetsu
The longtime vice-captain of the 4th Division, Isane Kotetsu is the sister of 1st Division 3rd Seat Kiyone Kotetsu and one of the longest-tenured vice-captains in all Seireitei. Her experience provides a much needed boon to the successes of her new captain, Maigo Kokoro, whilst her healing skills are reputed as amongst the finest in the lands. Isane is known to suffer from terrifying (but extremely odd) nightmares, and tends to shy away from injecting her personal feelings into matters. One of the hot rumors of the Seireitei currently is that Isane is currently dating Shyuuhei Hisagi...a rumor that has not yet been confirmed by either.

3rd Seat: Aeris Gainsburough
As the last remaining Ancient, Aeris is also amongst the most adept healers in the lands, with unique spells that provide both healing and incredible protection to those around her. Given these abilities, she has proven herself worthy of the position of 3rd Seat in the 4th Division both in practice, and in her participation in the famous raid on Callisto that lead to its capture and reunited her with lost love, Cloud Strife.

6th Division
Captain: Byakuya Kuchiki
Perhaps the most famous of the captains in the Seireitei, Byakuya Kuchiki is the head of the noble Kuchiki Clan and leader of the 6th Division of the Protection Squads. Often charged with overseeing defense and attacking missions, the 6th Division is renowned for its ability to perform in any situation and produce results promptly. The captain himself is no exception, his efficiency being legendary amongst the shinigami.
Status: Currently assigned to the defense of Seireitei and the supervision of new member training.

7th Division
Captain: Cloud Strife
An ex-SOLDIER in ShinRa's army, Cloud Strife has walked a long, hard path to become one of the leaders of the Resistance. Through battles with the Black Wizard Sephiroth, Midgar's army, and the State Military of Callisto, his battle prowess has been proven time and time again. For this reason and his natural charisma, Cloud was named a captain in the 13 Protection Squads and takes over for the departed Sajin Komamura. A squad known for its well-rounded fighting skills, Cloud's 7th Unit is a force to be reckoned with.
Status: Assigned to the protection of Costa del Sol
Lieutenant: Vincent Valentine
One of the most powerful and intimidating of the vice-captains of Seireitei, Vincent Valentine is a dark figure who has lived through one hellish nightmare after another. Fighting still only to ensure the safety of the planet, Vincent serves with perhaps his only friends in Cloud Strife, Aeris Gainsburough, and Cid Highwind. Barely able to cope, still, with the loss of his one-time love interest Lucrecia Crescent, Vincent spends vast amounts of time away from the Seireitei and his Division either gathering information, acting on his own, or visiting the waterfall where his love is said to rest.
Status: On Vacation...(as reported by Captain Strife of the 7th Division)
3rd Seat: Cid Highwind
The foremost pilot in the world, Cid's engineering expertise makes him a natural fit for the 12th Division. As a warrior, however, he is also quite skilled, and due to this reasoning (and his friendship with Cloud) he has repeatedly refused the vice-captain's seat in the 12th to remain the 3rd Seat in the 7th Division. With a mouth as dirty as his appearance and a fleet of airships at his command, Cid is an invaluable asset to the war efforts of Seireitei. It is also said that he is married to well-known scientist, Shera.
Status: Currently assigned to the defense and mobilization of the Costa del Sol occupation force
4th Seat: Auron
An experienced and skilled warrior, Auron was a mentor to many of the newest members of the Meribian Army before their union with the Seireitei. Having won several battles and lead many successful raids, Auron was dispatched in the famous attack on Callisto and fought evenly with the leader of the State Military, Fuhrer King Bradley. Unfortunately, he was caught in an unguarded moment during the battle and slain by the cyclopean homunculus. A small memorial to his memory was placed on the beach of Costa del Sol where the battle took place, and the 4th Seat of the 7th Division was set aside by Captain Strife in honor of his sacrifice.
Status: DECEASED
5th Seat: Biggs
A bumbling but deceptively talented warrior, it is likely by sheer luck that Biggs has managed to rise as high as the 5th Seat in the 7th Division. Whatever the case, he has the full confidence of his superiors, and is known to have significant knowledge of explosives and technology (likely passed on to him by former AVALANCHE technician, Jessie).

8th Division
Captain: Uryuu Ishida
The last known member of the proud Quincy (an ancient race of spiritually gifted archers) heritage, Uryuu fancies himself "The Most Skilled Projectile Artist in all Gaia". Unlike most who would make such a boast, however, the Last Quincy has the ability and power to support his claims. With a distaste for shinigami but a knowledge that only with their help can he protect those in need, he reluctantly serves as Captain of the 8th Division which has come to specialize in long-range combat. Though young, he is an incredibly clever, respectful, and cunning captain who has earned great respect from many within the protection Squads in his short time as captain.

9th Division
Captain: Ryo Akiyama (The Great Ryoman!)
While not a shinigami, Ryo is likely the most powerful and influential member of the Resistance against the Magic Emperor's Regime, and thus one of the most respected captains in all Seireitei. Though a very infamous eccentric, he is peerless on the field of battle and a deceptively strong leader. Known as the White Knight, he is the Governor of Meribia and leader of the possibly-defunct Althena's Guard.
Status: Assigned to the defense of Meribia...
Lieutenant: Squall Leonhart
Another skilled warrior whose mettle was on display during the Second Sorceress War in his own time, Squall's skills are now on display as the vice-captain of the 9th Division of the Seireitei. Though a well-known hero in his own right, he has never been fond of being called "leader", and is quietly proud to serve under the White Knight Ryo.
Status: On assignment in Ordalia Continent...
3rd Seat: Irvine Kinneas
The best sharpshooter in the land and a notorious ladies man, Irvine's bullets are famous for never missing their mark. Bolstered by the skill of his comrade, Squall, and his own well-honed fighting skills, Irvine has ascended the ranks of his division through efficient execution of the duties given to him. Though uncomfortable performing under great deals of pressure, he has been known to rise to the occasion given the right encouragement.
Status: On assignment in Ordalia Continent...
4th Seat: Tidus
An incredible athlete and a seasoned vet on the battlefield, Tidus is much more experienced and skilled than his youth would suggest. Having been affected greatly by the loss of his personal mentor and friend, Auron, Tidus has not seen action in some time. His heroics in combat and on the athletic stage are both the stuff of legends, nonetheless.

5th Seat: Gustave Meridon
A warrior with a hazy past and a knack for combining weaponry with time compression magic, Gustave was defeated during the attack on Aron by the Cuatro Espada Ulquiorra Schiffer with great ease. However a strange concoction given to him by the 12th Division Captain Alphonse Gheis has given him a new lease on life, which he now pledges to use to hunt down and defeat the one who killed him.

10th Division

Lieutenant: Rangiku Matsumoto
A beautiful shinigami as adept at battle as she is at making men fall at her feet, Rangiku Matsumoto has served as the lieutenant of the 10th Division for a far longer period than her current captain. Still, she seems to bear him no ill-will, and is extremely dedicated to him and their division (if not her paperwork). As Lieutenant of the 10th Division, she is under the direct order of her captain and the Commander-General, and may often be called to missions both inside and outside of the Seireitei.

3rd Seat: Kyle of Nanza
The only member of the Protection Squads ever to have faced Ghaleon in direct combat and survived (though it was thousands of years ago), Kyle has proven that he is far more than a brawling brigand. A warrior who has seen and survived the worst, Kyle was proud to serve in the war against Ghaleon once more. A recent incident in Aron has left him crippled by injury, however, and he is currently being treated with intensive care in the 4th Division Headquarters. His condition is stable, but still critical.

11th Division
Captain: Zaraki Kenpachi
As commander of the 11th Division Special Combat Unit, Zaraki Kenpachi is a leader to the most active squad in the Gotei 13. Their love of battle frequently lands them in the center of many conflicts, including some in which they have no interest whatsoever. The captain is no exception, and often ignores his standing orders so that he can find himself a good fight. He is the only captain who earned his office by defeating and killing the previous division captain.

Lieutenant: Yachiru Kusajishi
Many wonder why the second seat in the Special Combat Unit belongs to a young woman no bigger than a child, but of course, that is until they meet her in battle. Yachiru is a surprisingly capable lieutenant whose sole job (as per Zaraki's desires) is to follow her captain and engage in battle whenever possible. Truly, the lieutenant and captain of this division are inseparable.

12th Division
Captain: Dr. Alphonse Gheis
As captain of the 12th Division, Alphonse Gheis is the third Head of the Scientific Research and Development Bureau. Not unlike his predecessor (the departed Mayuri Kurotsuchi), Alphonse operates outside of the bounds of morality, but his work is superb. Any new chemical, medicine, or device that is needed for Soul Society is almost certain to be produced upon request by the "good" doctor. Though he does not rank amongst the most powerful of the Protection Squads' captains, his skills and surprises make him as dangerous a foe as there is.
Status: Currently assigned to his 12th Division Laboratory.

13th Division
Captain: Saburo Musashibo
Named captain of the 13th Division after the promotion of its former Captain Jyuushirou Ukitake, Saburo's division has the distinction of being the division that sends the most members to the real world to patrol for hollows. Like his predecessor, Saburo's duties include overseeing the patrols, and ensuring the continued smooth operations between Seireitei and the outside world. Unfortunately, Jyuushirou's faith in Saburo is not shared by every captain, and his lax attitude has shaken the confidence of the majority that do.
Status: Assigned to the supervision of all shinigami travel to and from the outside world from his post in Soul Society.
