Reaction Chloe paced around the room, anxiously waiting for the timer to beep. Ryan sat on the couch in front of her, a worried look on his face. "Are you sure it's not just the shot?" He asked cautiously, having been disappointed before, "You said it made you feel really sick." His words seemed to glide over her and she continued to wear a track in the carpet, hands held tightly to her abdomen. After what seemed like an eternity the timer beeped and Chloe shot to the coffee table, snatching up the test before Ryan could even reach for it. He watched her face as she stared at it, the box, then it again. Suddenly she dropped the test and started to cry. Ryan picked it up, inwardly mad at the doctor for giving her hope, but was puzzled to find that it was positive. "Chloe honey," he said as gently as he could, "Don't cry, it worked, you're pregnant." Her sobs slowed a bit as she wiped tears from her eyes but she didn't respond.
Uncomfortable with the situation but wanting to jump for joy he sat behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. It wasn't noticeable yet, but he couldn’t help feeling protective now that he knew she was carrying his children. "Chloe," he said again as she continued to cry, "What's wrong? This is what you wanted, isn't it?" She nodded, wiping her face with her sleeve." "I," she choked, "I'm happy, really." Normally he would have accepted the answer and left her alone but he could feel her heartbeat, and it was obvious she was lying. "Don't give me that," he snapped in frustration, "We just got the best news we've had in year and you're acting like a fool. Now tell me what's wrong?" She pulled his arms tight about herself, letting out a hesitant breath. "I'm scared," she whispered, hanging her head, "What if I mess things up? What if one of them doesn't make it?" Ryan wasn't sure how to respond, fearing those things as well. For a moment he recoiled from her, feeling his throat dry. Then he thought of something. Taking both of her hands he turned her around to face him, looking into her eyes before he spoke. "We'll worry about those things later," he told her kissing her forehead, "For now, be happy. You'll be a great mother." She nodded weakly, but gave no sign of believing him. "Hey," he said sternly, tilting her face up at him, "You and me, we can survive anything."

The Accident Their checkup wasn't until ten, but Chloe had insisted upon leaving the house by eight. The shot had certainly worked. At roughly thirty-two weeks she looked ready to burst. Ryan was moving too slowly for her tastes, taking his time to sip his coffee and thumb through the morning paper. Chloe seethed as she sat across from him, her hands resting on her stomach. "Aren't you going to finish your waffles?" He asked, peering at her over the pages. "I'm not hungry," she said stubbornly, despite the grumbles of protest. Ryan sighed, sensing why she was upset. "Just be patient," he urged, "We've waited this long, you can handle a few more minutes." She rolled her eyes but knew he was right. He was always right. By the time they left it was already 8:45 and she was becoming a little fussy. "You're driving too slow, we're going to be late," she chided, adjusting the air conditioner to suit her temperature spikes.
The rain was pouring down outside, steaming as each drop hit the chill asphalt. Ryan sped up a bit in hopes of appeasing her, but kept his mouth shut. They had been fighting a lot lately, not about the pregnancy so much as just stupid things. It seemed that everything one did was to annoy the other. Perhaps it was the stress, or the hormones, but to suggest either would almost certainly bring about another fight. He kept his hands tight around the wheel, peering sidelong at her every so often. Even if she was the size of a blimp and waddled when she walked she was still beautiful.
"What?" Chloe snapped, crossing her arms over her swollen chest. He smiled, offering a shrug as he turned the wipers up. The dust from the local construction had mixed with the fog and he could hardly see as their exit approached. Chloe spotted the sign before he did but said nothing, still a little grouchy. Suddenly another car hydroplaned in front of them, spiraling back with a slam of breaks. The car slammed into them at an angle, deploying the air bags as the driver's side panel collapsed in on itself.
Chloe woke to the sound of fire engines, finding herself wedged between the airbag and the seat. She groaned, feeling a warm liquid running down her legs. She tried to push the airbag away, hoping to relieve the pressure on her abdomen. Beside her Ryan was struggling, his head slumped over to the side. Blood was dripping from a gash on his forehead, and by the time the rescue workers had pried the mangled roof free his shirt was soaked. Chloe felt a hand on her arm, looking up to find a worried paramedic. He was talking, but she couldn't understand what he was saying. The man straightened her head and fastened a brace around her neck, wasting no time as she screamed out in pain. He cut a hole in the airbag, deflating it instantly. Once she was free the look on his face took a drastic turn and as Chloe struggled to figure out why he called over two more paramedics. Their expressions were just as grim as his as they lifted her onto a stretcher, giving her no answer as she fought to get back to Ryan.
The next thing she knew she was being rushed down a bright white hall with people all around her. In seconds they had cut her free of her clothes and attached her to an IV. "Where's Ryan?" she groaned, dazed and numb from the pain. No one answered and she asked again, this time trying to sit up, "Where's my husband?" A doctor pushed her back down, gesturing with a bloody glove, "They just took him into the OR, but we really need you to stay still alright? We're trying to help your babies." A wave of panic washed over her as she became aware of a sharp pain in her abdomen. The doctors were running an ultrasound over her, watching the screen hopefully. Suddenly one heartbeat appeared on the monitor, then another. They were faint, but they were still there.
"What happened?" she said, choking for air. "You were in a car accident, you're lucky to be alive, someone must be watching over you," the doctor from earlier explained, now dressed in clean scrubs. "And my babies? They're alright?" she asked frantically. He glanced at the heart monitor before answering, "We had a little scare. The force of the impact broke a few ribs and the bleeding was putting pressure on your womb." "What does that mean?" she asked, feeling a sense of dread. "It means your body put you into premature labor, that pain you were feeling was most likely contractions. Don't worry though, we were able to contain the bleeding and counter the effect before the babies dropped into the birth canal. Your boys won't be making an appearance tonight," he said calmly, adjusting the drip in her IV. She stared at the ceiling, taking a moment before it registered with her. "They're both boys?" she asked meekly, touching her tender abdomen with a finger. "I'm sorry, were you guys waiting to find out?" he asked quickly. Chloe shook her head, "We were on our way to find out." She hesitated, looking to the doctor with tears in her eyes, "Could you- Could you tell Ryan for me?" The doctor seemed on edge, but said simply, "I'll tell him as soon as he's out of surgery." With that he pushed a small syringe of liquid into her IV and Chloe fell into a much needed sleep.

Recovery Chloe woke with a throbbing pain, pushing the button for the nurse as she struggled to breathe. A plump woman responded quickly, putting her arm around Chloe to help her sit up. "Mrs. Walden," the nurse gasped, struggling against her weight, "Please calm down, you've got a few broken ribs. Take nice shallow breaths. There you go." Chloe calmed down, finding that short breaths only hurt right at the surface. "We'd give you some pain medication but Doctor Ford doesn't want to put any strain on the twins." she explained, offering Chloe a small oxygen mask. Chloe held the mask to her face and took a few quick breaths, nodding in understanding. Once she wasn't feeling so light-headed she watched the nurse busy herself around the room, trying to regain the strength to speak. "Where is my husband?" she rasped after a few moments, impatient for an answer, "I want to see him." The nurse stiffened, pausing in the middle of changing the IV bag. "He's down the hall in the ICU," she answered hesitantly, "But Doctor Ford doesn't think you're ready to go see him yet. You need as much rest as you can get." With that she left, looking like she couldn't wait to be out of there.
When the night staff came on the ward seemed to quiet down, and Chloe conversed little with the nurses that took over her care. They seemed nice enough but one girl in particular caught Chloe's attention. She was young, probably fresh out of college, and she was always asking what she could do to help. After a few fruitless tries to get back to sleep Chloe called her into the room, gesturing to the door. "I'm sorry to bother you," she said weakly, "But I can't seem to get to sleep and I was wondering if you could help me out to the sun porch, I want to look at the stars." The girl seemed a bit skeptical, closing the door behind her. "I don't know," she said softly, "I was told you just had surgery, I don't think you should be walking around." For a moment Chloe was discouraged, and then she got an idea. "I won't walk," she agreed, "Just bring me a wheelchair and I promise I'll stay in it." The girl nodded, finding this suitable, and within fifteen minutes they had lifted her into a wheelchair and managed to sneak her out of the room and into the solarium.
When the nurse left Chloe waited for a short time, hearing footsteps in the hall behind her. Once they had stopped she snuck past the nursing desk and down through out the corridor, finding the ICU eerily silent as the few nurses on staff tapped away at their computers. Down the row of rooms she slid slowly, feeling a twinge of worry as she heard groans and beeps emitting from within. She was nearly halfway through the unit by the time she found Ryan's room, her thought that perhaps he was alright cut short. He was laying there with wires all over his body, ghastly pale under the dimmed fluorescent lights. Glancing back at the desk she saw her chance and slipped inside, pulling herself out of the wheelchair to reach his hand. Shakily she stood beside the bed, gripping his hand as she stared down at his face, swollen and bloodied through the bandages. "Ryan," she said sweetly, pressing his hand to her stomach, "Wake up sweetheart, did Doctor Ford tell you? Me and the boys are alright." He didn't respond, and as she clutched his hand to her stomach she smiled. "I guess you're tired," she told him, moving him so that there was enough room for her to pull herself up onto the bed. She curled up beside him, resting his hand on her stomach as she drifted off to sleep.
"What are you doing in here?" An angry voice demanded, stirring Chloe from her sleep. It was Doctor Ford, and the expression on his face was a mixture of anger and disappointment. "I-," Chloe said softly, "I just wanted to be close to him, that's all. I didn't walk much." The doctor sighed, moving the chair beside the bed to help her down. "He can't hear you," he said solemnly, "We wanted to tell you yesterday but you weren't stable enough." Chloe looked mortified, her hand slipping from his side. "What?" she asked, feeling her throat dry out, "You're lying. He was fine, he's just asleep." The doctor shook his head, lifting her down from the edge of the bed into the wheelchair, "He hit his head pretty hard, there's a small chance he'll wake up but even if he does he'll have severe brain damage. Come on now, we'll need you to stay here for the rest of your pregnancy." Chloe started to protest, staring blankly at the figure in the bed, but she couldn't find any words. This was a dream. It couldn't be real.
