Are you going to "feed" the orphans?
  Sure, why not?
  No, this is so wrong!
  Meh, I don't care...

Pick up an orphan from the orphanage, show them a Merry X-Mas, and drop them off here for rewards!

So that is the Christmas-event? I sincerely hope this is a joke... how... cynical... eek I cannot describe how wrong this is to me. I'm not going to participate. What about you guys?

I think it's kina cute.

Actually, (like the halloween event trying battle system) they may be trying out how gaians react to children, since I know that's been a long standing petition.

To me, it is turning real children's suffering into a joke... did you read that "interview" in the announcement? I think what they did is outrageous... turning filthy, malnourished children into plump little angels so they can be adopted? What the hell?

I've got mixed feelings on this.
I can see how it could be terribly insensitive to some. Sure, they dressed it up so it's all over the top, but all you have to do is just squint a little, and you can easily see how anybody who's ever been an orphan or in a foster home could be VERY upset by it all.
Yet, I also can't help but feel that going down that road is what leads us to calling teletubbies gay and all that jazz.
What they SHOULD have done, since the whole game is just a tamagotchi knock-off, would be to have us maybe care for abandoned animals perhaps. Still a socially responsible action, but less toes to be trod upon.
My pair of pennies, anyway.

I agree. If it were puppies or kittens, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But human children? Call me overly sensitive, but that just feels so wrong on so many levels...

*shrugs*

Then don't do the event.

I think it would have been cool for either children or animals.

So it ended up here... Lydia, please, why did you move my topic, and why did you not tell me so beforehand? There's a lot of topics in the main forum that actually belong somewhere else, so why start here and in such rude a manner, too?

Gaia Orphan: "Please forgive my rudeness! I seem to have tracked the dust of my poverty all over your nice things."
"You don't need to waste your time on a wretch like me... I'm sure there are plenty of bright, attractive kids to help instead..."

Announcement: "Naw, thanks just the same, ma'am, but our stomachs are too weak for proper food. We gotta eat orphan food. You know, like gruel an' ratmeal an' industrial hardtack, an' stuff like that."

"Are You Sure You Want to Abandon Your Orphan

Why do you hate them?
Yes, I'm sick of that creepy little girl following me around!

Nuuu, I luff her! You can't take her away from me!"

"You've Abandoned Your Orphan

Your orphan has been re-condemned to the misery of the orphanage"

What are they trying to say? And apparently the orphans could own.. Cars...

I'm not participating because I just don't care about the events and items. I have other things to be doing.

The wording may have been a little poorly chosen, but I think the intentions were good. I've actually noticed a lot of people who're like orphans yay in writing, RPing, literature, etc. It's a mary sue sort of character, so it's not surprising with as much as they pop up, that gaia would think 'hey, people will like orphans being involved', and it's even less surprising considering the holiday we're talking about here.

I mean, is it wrong that dickens wrote about so many? Or only that gaia acknowledges them? They'd both be profiting, if Dickens was still alive. But it's not like it's profiting off of the suffering of a real person. I'm sure there're plenty of people who'd be just as offended if it were animals. Maybe it's just because I don't much care for people, but I don't think it's really worth fretting over. It'll be done in a week.

Well, it did shock me a bit at first because I thought it was a little strange.

Well, in a way, I guess it's teaching people to be more generous to others ... so, they can get free stuff.

Real life situation: Be generous, it's tax deductible.

Precisely. Feed the orphans fish heads and other crap, 'pimping them out' so they can sell themselves better at the adoption agency and then get free stuff. Disgusting.

Really, Ffaux, you astonish me. You did a 0.7k-words long rant here about people hurting other people's feelings by wishing them a Merry Christmas though they belong to a different religion, and then fail to understand how awful a real orphan or adopted child must feel reading all that over-the-top stuff that Roses has posted above?
So unless that rant of yours was just a smokescreen to justify your own irritation at being wished a Merry Christmas and you really don't give the honey in a bee's a** about the feelings of other people (and I don't think you do, contrary to what you might say now), I fail to understand how you cannot even consider the point I made there.

I astonish a lot of people, Cin, and not always in good ways. And I'd be willing to bet that I'll do it again, many times. Fact of the matter is, some things matter to me (Few things, as you know) and others don't. The treatment of pixilized children on an anime website is not one of them. I prefer to speak up for the rights of real people.

Yes, I'm insensitive to the feelings of people who may have been orphans, but I had my own problems growing up "Please forgive my rudeness! I seem to have tracked the dust of my poverty all over your nice things."
"You don't need to waste your time on a wretch like me... I'm sure there are plenty of bright, attractive kids to help instead..." Yeah, sounds a lot like my refusal to accept help, gifts, etc from anyone. I'm not worth it. I guess I can't really sympathize when my line of reasoning is the same). I can't fix everyone's lives for them. I just don't have time to care about everything. I do what I can in order of importance. The christmas thing is something that affects me in the real world, same reason I'll fight for rights for the GLBT community.

This is simply not priority to me.

Believe what you like about me, believe that I have feelings or not. I'd probably prefer you think I'm a cold heartless b*****d, but the fact remains that I do care, when it occurs to me to do so, or when it touches someone close to me.

I'm not perfect. You know that as well as anyone. Deal with it, 'cause I don't wish to be.

And now that I am the subject of your astonishment and ire, as usual, things can continue on as normal. Since obviously I'm to blame for all of the troubles in the world and was only ever lying about caring.

Does that mean you deny the existence of real orphans? Because those are whom I was taking my stand for. Dicken's characters at least had some dignity, they were based on real people, not those travesties they concocted. And what about feeding them ether and brandy? Ha-ha, what a joke. Yes, I'm uptight, priggish and altogether humourless... I cannot see the punchline in that, and after you reprimanded me so severly for making a joke at your expense, I have a hard time to see how you cannot understand the irony of it all.

I dealt with it, I'm dealing with it right now and there is no reason to assume I will not deal with it in the future... just as you do with me.

Yeah, obviously. Killing all those dinosaurs was really mean of you. razz

Many people won't do anything unless they are rewarded in return. It is hard to find a person that will do something and they aren't rewarded either internally or externally.

Were you an orphan? No I'm not trying to 'attack the person and not the subject' (Which ever Fallacy that was.. Straw Man perhaps?) Its just the passion which you use on the subject.

I also like your signature, but the only thing different between the two children, are that one takes effort and time, while the other generally take time, money, effort, and energy. Now I may be wrong, but the vast majority of Gaians won't put the time and effort into helping the orphans who are real. The pixel versions are much easier to tend to, with no real cost, and no real time wasted. No need for you to worry about distrust and/or emotional trauma.

If you want to advocate your cause better, I suggest carrying it out offline.
It is not often that people change or help because of an online forum.
There is always complaint PMs and petitions, but it is a petty event in which Gaia probably believed that if they used children, that they'd be able to attract a larger amount of users.
