Okay, I may as well, since I'm in a disgustingly fangirly mood, due to my collection being completed by dear old Sinterklaas. ~squee~ I've finally got the Return. heart So of course I ran a marathon and have gotten through most of it today, to the disgust of the family.
Anyway, I've had a huge crush on Jeremy since I was twelve, and I was absolutely devestated when I heard of his untimely demise. RIP. So this is my bit of tribute to a great actor, a good man and a terrific Holmes.
Lots of love forever, Jeremy.

Jeremy Brett is the only Sherlock Holmes that matters.
While I only discovered the Granada series a few years ago [and quite by accident, as most wonderful things are discovered], I have been hooked ever since.

Jeremy Brett, then unknown to me, seemed to perfectly capture the character that I had fallen for when I was first introduced to Sherlock Holmes in the second grade [after school, watching "Wishbone"]. It held true every time I watched another episode.
It is impossible for me to sit through any other portrayal of Holmes without finding myself either comparing the actor to Brett, or finding myself offended that the actor didn't fight the writers' artistic license in favour of the cannon. Basil Rathbone and his writer's can kiss my hind-end for what they did to Watson.
Although Rupert Everett did an OK job, but Brett is the only one that counts in my book. ^.^
Since I've watched Brett bring the character to life in a way my own imagination could never achieve, I've been in love with his voice, his mannerisms, and all the little nuances he brought to Holmes that are now inextricable from my mind's eye whenever I read the canon.
Also, I'll never understand why Eliza chose 'Enry 'Eggin's over Freddie. Freddie for the win.

I started watching Jeremy Brett as Holmes when they first started running on "Mystery" on PBS back in the 1980's. xd I remember being so blown away by his performance in "Speckled Band"--his hands shook waiting for that snake to make it's appearance! surprised It was like, "He KNOWS a deadly creature is going to come in the room tonight & somebody MIGHT get bitten if he isn't really fast to react!" I was used to the impervious Basil Rathbone Holmes & that was pretty cool!

That's the same reason I like Daniel Craig better than any other Bond before him- he doesn't make it look easy.
But I digress. I think the magick is truly attributable to his voice. Aside from the perfect performance, his voice just sucks me in every time.
I could listen to him talk [or sing] all day long. Just like a Reagan speech, or William Blake.
Seriously though, the man was fine. Fine as hell.

I love his sarcasm. I know that sounds a bit odd, but I always pictured Holmes as being far colder and sharper than Rathbone played him. Brett stuck to the books admirably.

blaugh Hallelujah! Somebody else finally posted! mrgreen
I think I saw something way back after the 1st season of SH that JB didn't want to do any more--that he had depressive tendencies & the role was bringing them out in him so badly he really was feeling lousy a lot. He must've gotten it all sorted out & under control though, since he did go on to do a lot more!

Well, toward the end of the first season his wife became very ill, and in an interview on NPR [which had since been removed, damn them] he said that he was depressed that he hadn't spent more time with her. I believe that was right after they filmed The Final Problem- which would make sense because Edward Hardwicke replaced David Burke as Watson from The Empty House onward.
But he also said that he wanted to come back and finish the cannon, but unfortunately his own illness prevented him from completing it.
I wish the link to that interview was still there- it was wonderful listening to his voice even without the words of Holmes coming out of it. He talked about how he finally had to bargain for more time in production, because the week they would have used to rehearse was spent fighting the screenwriters' artistic changes for the cannon, and a lovely little anecdote about the height discrepancy between Burke and Hardwicke, and how Hardwicke at first tried wearing shoe inserts to make him look taller... It was funny.

I wouldn't have been able to wait. I got them all for full price. crying
What I love, though, is Jeremy's artistic fits. XD Like when he chopped all of his hair off and gave the makeup artists a hard time 'cause they couldn't do the slicked back thing anymore...

The first time I saw Jeremy Brett (other than wooing Eliza Doolittle on the big screen) was in a play--yes, live and on stage--in a play titled The Crucifer of Blood. This was probably 25 years ago. I'm going to have to look it up. It was cobbled together out of a couple of Sherlock Holmes stories. The jaw-dropper is that Brett did not play Holmes; he played Watson! Charlton Heston xp played Holmes. Everyone posting in this thread will understand when I say that Brett's portrayal of Watson was so memorable that I can still picture it today. Even though I had not known his work before going into the theatre (I didn't remember that he had played Freddie) I still remembered his name when PBS first began broadcasting his portrayal of Holmes. It says a lot that he could play BOTH characters convincingly.

Here it is...Brett as WATSON!
I was so excited to find the picture that I didn't hang around to get the details. Holmes would have had all the pertinent facts cross-referenced in the files. I confess, I had to resort to Google.

I'm looking for DVDs and old VHSs of The Crucifer of Blood, but none of them have Brett as Watson [some actor named Richard Johnson seems to have done all of the apparent taped, studio productions].
