Basically this is a casual Tales of Lethe roleplay, which means it's set on Lethe, but we won't be using any of the game rules; it's just in written roleplay format. Consider it ToL for beginners.

RULES:

The rules are fairly simple.

- Follow all of the guild rules! That means no swearing! And if you MUST be romantic, don't take it to inappropriate levels!
- Absolutely no godmoding or powerplaying. Controlling others' characters is considered very rude by myself and a majority of other intelligent roleplayers. And being invincible, impervious to any kind of negative effect, and knowing every spell in your alignment is just annoying and ruins the game for other players.
- Your character absolutely may NOT have more than one elemental alignment. Such a thing runs completely contrary to how the magical system of Lethe works. Since this obviously isn't the actual game with all of its rules and regulations, I have no way to check characters' spell knowledge, but please keep it reasonable.

Before we begin, here are some things you need to know about the world.

- There are nine races that inhabit the planet of Lethe:

THE HUMANS are one of the most populous species. They live in all areas of the world and come in all sorts of ethnicities.

THE SALGUIN, or the Light Ones, resemble Humans except for their pointy ears and the white feathered wings on their backs that allow them to fly.

THE MORCAI, or the Dark Ones, resemble Humans except for their pointy ears and the black leathery wings on their backs that allow them to fly.

THE RAMANS are a tall, thin race characterized by the large, flight-capable wing feathers growing from their arms, and the smaller, whiskerlike feathers on their cheeks.

THE DRAGONS are a large, quadrupedal, reptilian race with massive scaly wings. They are solitary and dwell in the mountains.

THE DWARVES are a diminutive, stocky race with a great love of technology and machinery.

THE FAIRIES are an immortal, all-female race with the appearance of children--and the maturity levels as well.

THE BIHRUNGS are best described as shark dragons. They travel the oceans of Lethe in family pods.

THE CENTAURS, half Human, half horse, are a proud race with a tribal society. They host the annual Great Hunt on the Shouldred Plains.

- Each individual born on Lethe has the ability to manipulate magic of a certain element. This is known as having an affinity for that element.

- The ten elements are:

FIRE - Element of combustion and heat.

EARTH - Element of rock and metal.

ELECTRICITY - Element of charges and magnetism.

WATER - Element of moisture and liquids.

AIR - Element of gases and winds.

PLANT - Element of vegetable life and functions.

ANIMAL - Element of animal life and functions.

LIGHT - Element of luminescence.

DARKNESS - Element of shadow.

SPIRIT - Element of soul.

- Technically, each race has its own set of probabilities for each element (utilized during character creation), but since this isn't the actual game, I'll go ahead and let you pick any one element for your character.

- The dominant light and energy source on Lethe is High Magic Cores, small tetrahedral objects that constantly give out a strong magical light. Although they only appear on semi-annual Corefall Nights, when they float gently from the sky in a random area, they are the most preferred source of illumination and power, as the pure magic within them never exhausts and they do not output any of their energy as heat.

-Magions are the official currency of Lethe. They come in the form of coins cut from quartz and come in 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100-magion denominations.

- I think I've covered all of the basics you'll need to know for this RP, but if you have any further questions or things that need clarifying, please let me know.

So just make up a character (or, if you already play the game, go ahead and use your game character), and jump on in! I'll be making the first post to set the scene and give you something to work off of.

- One last thing before we start; please don't use any of the above information without Lucentas' permission. Everything about Tales of Lethe is copyrighted to her, and she's worked very hard on the game and doesn't want to see any part of it stolen. Thanks.

~Setting~

This is the story of Heratio Ferdo, cousin of the three Feralai children. An avid entrepreneur, he traveled much, leaving the halls of Setami Li Amalia in Corax to do buisness with the world proper. Yet being a member of the Feralai clan, he too bore the curse that came from Galif meddlings with the fabric of existence. The curse caused failure and bankruptcy to follow in his wake. No matter what he did he could never succeed in any buisness for long. Finally, Heratio's failures deemed him the anger of a powerful Raman noble and he was arrested and locked in the palace dungeons in Seti until he could manage to pay his debts. He toils the days away doing strenuous tasks to pay off his debt t Lord Pavol which never seems to diminish as Pavol lays interest on the already mountainous amount he had to pay.

Your story takes place 1 year after the curse was broken and Emma Feralai was resurrected.

The main doors to the dungeon opened with a piercing clang. In walked two figures; one, a royal guard, and the other, struggling and yelling in his grip, a waif of a teenage Raman girl. Her brown hair was long, stringy, and dirty, as was her face and her ragged clothes. "Lemme go!" she screeched, striking out at the guard with her one free hand. The girl's pale arm seemed to stand out in the subdued light of the entrance hall. There were only a few scattered, scraggly feathers on it. The guard grabbed her arm and forced it to her side.

The clerk looked up at the awkward pair and opened a thick tome, dipping his colorful quill into its inkwell. He cleared his throat when the two of them were close enough.

"Arrested for attempted theft in the royal kitchens," the guard announced, giving the girl a rather rough jab in the ribs with his elbow. "Temporary confinement until punishment can be arranged."

She hissed at him through her teeth. Her brown eyes flashed with rage and defiance.

The clerk nodded and flipped through the pages of his book. "Looks like we can fit her into cell B3-46 for now. It's just got a Human in it," he droned, quite bored.

"And she might as well be Human, so I'm sure she won't mind," the guard spat as he pushed the girl past the clerk's desk and down a winding flight of stairs.

The door to Heratio's cell opened and the guard half-pushed, half-threw the girl into it. She sprawled on the floor, trembling and clenching her fists.

"I'm sure you won't mind this...guest," the guard called to Heratio offhandedly. "She'll be out of here by sundown. The dungeons are getting so crowded nowadays..." he muttered to himself before shutting and locking the door securely.

The girl growled. It was the low, feral growl of one who has lost their sense of self.

Heratio looked upwen the door opened. He made no reply, not because he didn't care, but because he was too tired to say anything witty or sarcastic. He watched as they threw the girl in. If it wasn't for the few feathers she had, he would have mistaken her for human. He listened as she growled after the guard.

"No use in growlin' at 'em now," muttered Heratio, "they can't hear you through the door. Save your breath for when it really counts then pow!" He swung his fist weakly through the air, "knock em dead with your most asinine comebacks." He smiled weakly.

Heratio was lying against the back wall, filthy and in rags. His fine cotton suit was taken from him under the pretext of "payment" when Pavol had hi imprisoned. Now he wore hempen shirt and pants. His fine black hair was greasy and matted, grown long from lack of a barber. His widow's peak that he was so proud of couldn't be seen under the bangs that covered his forehead. His tanned skin was caked in dirt from the manual labor they required of him. All this yet his eyes shone with a spirit and zeal not expected in someone so ragged, tired, and impoverished as he. The whites of his eyes shone out clear and the green within was like fresh spring leaves, full of life and wit. His eyes alone betrayed any sign of life.

In contrast, the girl's eyes seemed like death warmed over. They seemed devoid of life, hope, spirit. She looked up at Heratio and glared at him cautiously. Stuck in a cell with a filthy Human--a male, no less. She rose to all fours and launched herself at the door, letting out a soul-rending roar of anguish and rage. She scratched at the door with her unkempt nails, breathing hard like an angry aurox. Frothy spittle flew from her mouth, spraying the door and the floor. Finally, she slumped in a heap to the floor, her back rising and falling as she took deep, seething breaths.

Heratio frowned slightly. "Now is that the way to introduce yourself?" he asked with a laugh, "Come now, if we're gonna be stuck in here together we might as well make the best of it." He coughed hard putting his fist to his chest. He breathed heavily for a second and then tried to speak again. "Sorry 'bout that my name is Heratio, what's yours?" he extended his hand knowing full well that the girl, as a Raman (wingless or not), may flat out reject his gracious gesture.

The girl looked at him, confused. Obviously it was some kind of trap to get her guard down. He was even faking illness. It disgusted her. She stayed near the door, eying him warily and recoiling out of instinct when he extended his hand. For some reason, she found the words spilling out of her mouth, although they left a nasty taste. She did not enjoy the sound of her own name. She was glad it was not spoken often. "Avis." The Raman's voice was hoarse and cracked, showing only the slightest inclination that it might belong to a young female. "My name is Avis." Her words echoed awkwardly in her ears as she anticipated Heratio's next move. Although attempting to escape the guards and the cell had taken a lot out of her, she was not afraid to fight to the death to defend herself--whether it be his death or hers. She began outlining her plan in her head: if she survived the ensuing fight, she would wait out the rest of the day and escape when they came back for her. She had no reservations about spending several hours in a cramped cell with a corpse; she knew death well enough to not be fazed by it. And if she didn't survive, well, at least she would go down fighting, the only honorable way for a Raman to go. For she was a Raman, through and through, although her feathers had betrayed her at birth and she had been cast down to the rubbish piles by her own parents, to eke out 16 years' worth of existence as a non-person, never to enjoy the supreme ecstasy of flight that was the goddess-given privilege of most other members of her race. Not that she cared about any of that. The only things she knew were the primal desires to survive and eat. Although survival was taking priority at the moment, and she could be dangerously clever when it came to ensuring it.

Heratio expected as much so he put his hand down.
"Avis," he said, "That's a beautiful name. It's fitting... I'm sure... you're... very... prou..."
Heratio was suddenly overcome with fatigue and passed out.

Avis blinked. She wasn't expecting that to happen. Slowly, hesitantly, she crept toward Heratio, sniffing the air for signs of danger. Was he really unconscious? Or was this a trap? She waited for a few moments, watching him carefully. Shallow breathing...no eye movement...he seemed to be genuinely out. She relaxed a little. Guess her plan was moot, at least for the moment. She decided to pass the time by searching the cell (and Heratio) for anything interesting or edible.

An hour later a rough knock came on the door waking up Heratio. A rough looking Raman guard peered in, sneering at the two down his beak-like nose.

"Food," he spat out as he slid two plates into the room.

"Why thank you kind sir, I'd tip you but well..." Heratio said, sarcastically shrugging. The Guard huffed at him and slammed the door shut. Heratio groaned as he got up to reach for his plate. Sleeping against the stone wall had left him sore.

Avis had been curled up in the corner, watching Heratio like a cat. When the guard opened the door, she jumped to her feet as the feathers on her cheeks bristled. She eyed the food hungrily, and cautiously prowled to it, all the while keeping her eyes on Heratio. Quick as a flash, she snatched the plate from the floor and began smelling it for signs of poison. Detecting none, she gingerly stuck a small morsel in her mouth and chewed it for a while. It seemed safe enough, so she began grabbing the food in large handfuls and stuffing it in her mouth, gulping it down and licking the plate clean afterward. She tossed the plate down nonchalantly and sat against the wall by the door, watching Heratio eat. Hopefully he would be wasteful and leave some behind. She needed every last particle of food she could get.

Heratio began eating his food, carefully, slowly, savoring the slop he by now found a delicacy. He stopped for a moment as he observed Avis testing her food and then eat it like she hadn't tasted food in days. Maybe she hasn't... thought Heratio.
"You're going to make yourself sick if you eat like that," he advised, but she paid him no heed. He sighed and went back to his food. He finished eating and noticed how Avis watched his plate. All he had left was a small piece of bread that was stale. He held it out to her.
"You want it?" he asked, "I couldn't eat anymore if I wanted to. All this rotting junk they give us is turning my insides out. But food is food and you gotta eat." He gazed into her eyes for a moment.
"Just promise me this, eat slow. You'll feel more full for longer periods of time that way."

Avis peered up at him. She was small for a Raman, only 5'7". Her emaciated figure only served to accentuate her deceptively frail physique. Crazy Human. Was he really turning down food? She could only look into his eyes for so long before snatching the bread and turning away, instinctively handling it and sniffing it like a squirrel. Looking into others' eyes was not something she did if she could help it. It made her very uncomfortable, like they were trying to get into her mind, the only sanctuary from the world that she had left. She mulled over Heratio's advice for a moment. Was it worth a try? Well, maybe she'd experiment with it, but she'd never let him know it. She turned her back to him and took a few small nibbles, letting her tongue work the bread all over her mouth before swallowing. Well, at least she got to taste it better this way. Taste was a pleasure she could rarely afford.

She slunk back to her seat on the far wall and stared at Heratio again. Maybe he wasn't so bad...for a Human. Or a male. No one had ever given her food by their own free will, after all. Well, since fighting for her life didn't seem to be a viable option at the moment, she decided to try something different. At least it would break the monotony of being stuck in a prison cell. "Ahem." She made an attempt at clearing her throat. "What're you in for?" she asked with a hint of a smirk.

"Me?" asked Heratio, he gave a short laugh, "Well let's see here..." He stroked his chin as he looked at the ceiling thoughtfully.
"...mass murder, treason, espionage, grand larsony, and... I think that's it," he finished and looked at Avis, his face completely serious. The air crackled with silent tension for a few seconds.

Avis hissed as her feathers bristled. However, in the back of her mind, the cogs of her brain were turning. Think, Avis, they seemed to be saying. If he was really convicted of all of those things, why isn't he in one of the lower-level, high-containment cells? She watched him carefully to see if he was lying. The slightest eye movement, the minutest tremble of the hand, could give him away. Until then, however, she had no good reason to let down her guard. Survival had become her number one priority again, and would be so until further notice.
