Well in light of Achikah's first-person shooter thread, I've decided to make my own thread. In it I will sing praises to the....

*drum roll*

Third-person shooter!

I'm not so much an FPS gamer. First-person shooters are fun, sure, but they're really what's holding back the game industry. Everyone wants to make some money by cashing in on the fps craze and no one's willing to really take a chance anymore. But the third-person shooter... now there's something. It's been there from the very beginning, but it's never gotten tired. Malleable enough to leave room for plenty of innovation, it's never the same thing twice. Unless it's, y'know, like a sequel or something. But still.

Yes! I recently beat Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Tell me of your own experiences.

Pfft. FPS are not killing the gaming industry. There are plenty out there that are, indeed, raising the bar. You just haven't been playing them Mister I-can't-get-into-FPS.
Call of Duty 4 was amazing, both graphically and story wise. Bioshock has mezmorizing scenery(when you're first entering Rapture OMFGWTFBBQ! AWESOMENESS!) and poetic undertones. F.E.A.R. and Fatal Frame even allowed horror to mesh in successfully with the FPS mechanics and, in my opinion, was way scarier then anything a TPS has offer (be it SH, RE, Siren, etc.) Hell, even some TPS games are becoming more like FPS, like the aiming mechanics in MGS series, and even the over the shoulder versions found in RE4,Mass Effect and soon to be Dead Space.
Don't get me wrong, I love TPS also, but don't short change FPS and claim they're ruining the gaming industry when they're pushing boundaries just as much as any other genre.

The good ones that push boundaries are the ones that are improving the industry. But there are a ton of games that are just there to try to cash in on the whole fps thing.

And TPS's have some pretty neat things you can't do with a FPS. For instance, blind firing and firing around corners, and cover. And I personally find the TPS to give me what a FPS does not; namely, a sense of self as an object that occupies space. The FPS also doesn't account for things such as peripheral vision. I'm quite partial to the over-the-shoulder view because it sort of gives you the best of both worlds. It's like halfway. I like that.

Lots of games are trying to cash in for the sake of being games, not just for being FPSers. I'm sure you can find just as many bad TPS (if not more) out there as there are bad FPS. The game industry is a growing populace of profit. And alot of FPS have the advantage of multiplayer on their hands which rarely TPS offer. That's a huge bonus in my opinion because I adore playing with friends. Like Halo 2, I hate teh story plot but god, the multiplayer makes me gasm a bit cause it's so fun.
In Call of Duty 4 and Rainbow 6 it gives you the option to take cover, blending in, etc. Sometimes, with the voyueristic viewing, it makes the actions happening to the main character that much more devastating.

COD4 SPOILER:
Like in COD4 when your character survives a nuclear attack and a helicopter crash and your at the brink of life. It's devastating to watch you drag yourself across a post-apocalyptic wasteland with a mushroom cloud in the background, your hands charred and bloody and your vision pusating with pain. It's gut wrenching.

Plus, some of the FPSers coming out are ridiculus. Have you seened Mirror's Edge? Holy crap, takin' it to the next level.

TPS have seen better days, and with all the garbage ones that've come out over the decades, it's hard to say there are tons of good ones but if you pick through the crap you'll find just as many good TPS as there are FPS. With time on their side too there could actually be more but because of so many FPS having the new technology you can't look back and say the same about another TPS that you can about that exact seen on COD4. Give it time and you'll start seeing more like MGS4. (Which at the moment I can't think of any.)

In the next few months though...GoW2. Now before anyone starts bashing me or it, think. It had everything...EVERTHING that makes an action TPS a ******** awesome TPS. Between graphics, gameplay, characters, action, and serious fun multiplayer. It's hard to say it's at all bad in anyway. Sure the GENERAL story was almost generic but...nvm I'll stop there.
What I'm getting at is TPS have just as much potential to be great in ever department as FPS. You can never get the same feeling as looking through the eyes of your character as COD4 but instead you can get a great cinematic sorrow like you did in MGS4. But you also get the ability to do some awesome action and witness it through the 3rd perspective instead of getting motion sickness when your character starts doin' some whacked out s**t like in Breakdown, if anyone played that.

Hell, look at SOCOM: Confrontation, they're not taking anything to the ext level really...but they are using the greatness of 3rd person to really make Multiplayer awesome.

At the moment, that's all I got.

But to each his own.
