{Ʈ}his was once a peaceful land, long ago.

Before this age of darkness, there was a great time of peace throughout the realms. A time when great cities reined in the Southern lands; where education flourished and scholars were held in the highest esteem. A time when conflicting nations sorted out their differences with words and not weapons. This was an age of Enlightenment - A period in time marked, not by bloodshed and mutual hostility, but by understanding and philosophical curiosity.

Those days are long past. Their memories turned to dust and stone, trampled by the barbaric and crushing force of the falling Southern nations. Economies collapsed and scholars were forced to become soldiers. The roads once safe to travel became home to highway robbers and thieves; now disappearing under a growing wilderness. The once great cities are now only ghosts in a forgotten past. Yet, we humans did not disappear completely in the wreckage and aftermath.

The proud and resilient found ways to survive against this "ending of the world". Now, nearly a century later - we live within the confines of a monarchy. With no real government to speak of, we find ourselves trapped in the strict bounds of the caste system. Few scholars still exist and those that do are somewhat feared and mistrusted by the lower classes; their knowledge explained by ignorant superstitions.

In these uncertain times, our monarchy is fairly stable. With the protection granted to us by our natural surroundings and the leadership of an honest royal family, the Kingdom of Althalos is a rare safe-haven. However, it is far from perfect and the success of the Kingdom lead to frequent attacks on its outer villages.

Within the Kingdom itself, jealously and greed are slowly finding their way into the hearts of the rulers. A dark shadow seems intent on destroying the current King and taking away the protection he offers his Kingdom. Fortunately, many obstacles stand in the way; honest rulers and protectors of the Kingdom that would see this treachery at an end.

Even darker than the traitor is news of an arriving enemy from the eastern plains. The peasants call her a witch; it is uncertain if she really is so. In the mountains, she seems to be waiting for something. The King has sent several scouting parties to find and trap the witch, but none have returned. A wise sage predicts that the witch is preying upon someone in the Kingdom, someone she can use to complete her dark plans. However, none are certain who this person might be...

{ʂ}etting...

The story takes place in a time period similar to that of the Dark Ages or Early Middle Ages in Scotland and England. As our story is fictional, the location is not actually England. The name of the continent is simply referred to as Oceania (humans at this time would not have a great knowledge of geography - excepting perhaps the wise sage).

The Kingdom of Althalos consists of three smaller fiefs and surrounding villages. The royal castle is housed at the center of the kingdom; though it is not particularly large. The fiefs are named after the three lords who preside over them; Kamlek, Fendrel and Drake. Each fief has its own village and working peasants who tend the land and crops.

The Kingdom lies within a deep valley, which has granted a natural barrier against enemies and the violence of nature. To the west is the great lake Peronell, beyond which very little is known. East and South of Althalos are the vast expanses of Ellyndor Forest. Many villagers and even noblemen do their hunting here, though few venture deep into the woods. Traveling rogues and outcasts tend to find their home here. To the North lie the Mountians of Hadrian and several outposts belonging to a group of bandits.

Northeast is the Hadrian Pass, where Althalos opens up onto a wide plain. Residing here are the opposing villages that frequently attack the valley, attempting to conquer the kingdom. The villages are not connected by any singular authority or government, they are the disjointed result of families uprooted from their cities and homes after the destruction of the Southern Lands. The people are unwilling to join another monarchy and therefore fight against the Kingdom of Althalos. Though they are small in comparison to the Kingdom's forces, they have fierce warriors and no "Code of Honor" to restrain them in battle.

_ _ _ _ o1. L I T E R A C Y --

This is an Advanced Literate roleplay. If you don't know what that means, leave. For the rest of you, this roleplay requires that you have a solid understanding of the English language and the process of writing. Spelling and grammatical errors are understandable, but do not allow it to get to the point where your posts are laced with them. This roleplay will be conducted in third person, past tense. Your posts should be AT LEAST three paragraphs in length (long, detailed paragraphs) and should be well thought out. Please take your time when writing; we literates are rather slow and no one is likely to rush you.

_ _ _ _ o2. P O S T I N G --

Although I'm not particularly strict about posting formats, I realize that many advanced literates prefer "aesthetically pleasing" posts. Though I won't chew you out for something plain (it suits me just fine), I'd appreciate it if you did your best in this area. Also, to keep things from getting messy - please use size 9 - 11 font and no outrageous neon colors! I would also prefer if you used colored text only for your characters speech and thoughts, while leaving the rest of the text black/gray. As for your pictures, I would like real life people. Not anime and not drawings.

_ _ _ _ o3. C H A R A C T E R S --

Your character profiles should reflect the roles outlined below as well as the time period they're living in. This means that, although the princess may be independent, she is still forced to conform in some ways to the masochistic views of the time period (lest she be burned as a witch). Your characters names must also fit; look up common titles and surnames of the middle ages if you must. I'm sure I'll mention this again - no Japanese names, please. Furthermore, I would like your characters to have depth. No one needs to be perfect and it's always more interesting when the characters have personality flaws.

_ _ _ _ o4. A C T I V I T Y --

As there are very few character parts in this RP, it is essential that all players post as frequently as possible. On average I expect you to post AT LEAST once every other day. Of course, I understand that real life interruptions take place. All I can ask is that you do your best to be here in respect for the other members of the RP.

_ _ _ _ o5. M A T U R I T Y --

Due to the fact that most advanced literate writers are sixteen and older, this roleplay does not have a rule against mature material. This is the Dark Ages, so lopping off heads and viciously murdering peasants isn't unheard of. Also, I have no problem with romance taking place in the RP. However, both parties must agree to the union of the characters and it must fit into the plot of the story somehow. Cursing is acceptable as well, but keep it in the time period. "What a brazen faced varlet art thou!"

_ _ _ _ o6. C O N F O R M I T Y --

Not to worry kids; this doesn't mean I'm trying to take away your freedom of expression. You can be just as unique as you want. But, please keep in mind that this story is set at a time period between the dark and middle ages. We'll be a little lenient with the language used (I realize we do not all speak "Ye Olde English" fluently). But, for the love of God, please refrain from using any "dude"s or "totally"s in the RP. This also applies to the naming of your character. Please pick something relevant to the time period. AND NOTHING JAPANESE DAMNIT!! D<

{Ƈ}haracters...

_ _ _ _ _| A Proud King |
_ _ _ _ _ _ _With the heart of a Lion

You have the spirit of a warrior and the tactical mind of a leader. However, it was never quite in your plan to sit around on a throne ruling over the lower classes. Since childhood you've been trained in the ways of a knight and a commander. You were the strongest of the other boys your age and excelled in the arts of jousting and swordplay. Your father and uncle's allowed you to ride with them into battle against the attacking outer villages. The glory of battle and the passion for defending your people is engrained in your soul. Though you do not hold any particular peasant in high esteem and would never consider them worthy of your individual attention (for this is the way you were raised), you are sworn to protect the group of them as your people. As far as King's go, you are uniquely active in your role; often leading the way into battle. Of course, this leaves you little time for planning the domestic welfare of your kingdom - a task which more often than not you leave up to your Queen.

--- Age 42 - 47 ♂
--- King Charles of Althalos
--- Played by: Sir -- B E N xx

_ _ _ _ _| A Clever Queen |
_ _ _ _ _ _ _With rapidly fading health

Your grace and beauty are certainly enough to convince anyone of your royalty. However, there is more to you than the delicate flower that you appear to be. If the King is the head of the kingdom, you are the back bone that supports the realm. While your husband is off in battle, it is you who must command the castle. Though any male would fail to recognize it; your decisions are more important than those of a warrior in determining the welfare of your people. You attend to the imports and exports of your castle and its outlying villages, the distribution of food and clothing, the safety of the castle walls against intruders and numerous other tasks that weigh heavily on the kingdom's prosperity. Anyone other than you might struggle under such a burden, but your quick mind and sharp wit allow you to operate flawlessly. Then again, perhaps the task has taken its toll on your body - though you are still beautiful, you are gradually becoming more and more weak.

--- Age 38 - 43 ♀
--- Queen Catherine of Althalos
--- Played by: The Sadistic Cupcake

_ _ _ _ _| A Loyal Knight |
_ _ _ _ _ _ _With a promise to protect

As your father before you, it is your sworn duty to protect the loyal family. You may be young and inexperienced in battle, but you are passionate about you responsibility and have a youthful exuberance for obligations as a knight. Due to your father's loyalty and success before his death, you were granted the position as leader of the King's inner guard. While in most castle's this job is quite safe, it is not so in Althalos. As the King usually rides out to lead his soldiers, you must ride out in the front line with him. The King himself has known you since childhood and was close friends with your father (though the strictness of the caste system forced them to behave accordingly). Your father died in service to the King several years ago, but you are not bitter. His death took place on the field, fighting alongside the King - you could not think of a more glorious way to end. Your father was the greatest knight you have ever known and sometimes his memory causes you to doubt yourself. Still, you are determined to guard and protect the royal family. The young princess who you were so close to as children does cause a problem some of the time, with her adventurous spirit.

--- Age 20 - 24 ♂
--- Sir Fendrel de Lampérière
--- Played by: Drake_Orion

_ _ _ _ _| An Independent Princess |
_ _ _ _ _ _ _With an agenda of her own

Never one to enjoy elegant gowns or fancy balls, you find your pleasure in activities deemed inappropriate for women. As your father was never much for the politics of the caste system, you spent your early childhood amongst the boys. You love riding and are quite a skilled hunter. But, your greatest passion is also your darkest secret for you are adept at the art of swordplay. Even your lenient father would never allow you to disgrace yourself by partaking in that unladylike sport. It was so much easier when you were young to play with the boys and blend in. Now, however, you are a young lady and must act accordingly. Even the knight who was your closest childhood friend must treat you differently. Perhaps you cannot fight with the men, but you still find ways to push the envelope. You've been taking lessons from the wise sage lately to learn how to read! And whenever the opportunity presents itself, you slip off into the forest. If you aren't careful, you may find yourself in some very hot water.

--- Age 14 - 18 ♀
--- Princess Elizabeth of Althalos
--- Played by: AzureShino

_ _ _ _ _| An Insidious Lord |
_ _ _ _ _ _ _With the tongue of a serpent

You have slowly managed to crawl your way up the social ladder, managing to find your place as the Lord of Fief Drake. You are cunning and persuasive, talents that make up for your lack of bravery. Though the others are unaware of it, you originally hail from a village in the plains. The only survivor of what seemed like a brutal attack on your village, you were forced to seek refuge in the lands of the very people who destroyed your young life. You were forced to train with the other boys as a child; the Weapons Master jeering at you for being weak and timid. In the field of sports and weapons you were always outdone by the other boys, particularly the prince (now King). But, you were always the best in maths and sciences; skills that helped define you as a scholar. These skills allowed you to reach the position you have today. With rage and bitterness still alive within you, the decisions you make could very well tear the kingdom apart.

--- Age 30 - 35 ♂
--- Unnamed
--- Played by: No one

_ _ _ _ _| A Stealthy Rogue |
_ _ _ _ _ _ _With loyalty to none but herself...

The struggle of existence in an uncaring world has been your ever-present companion since childhood. Your parents were honest people and hard workers, spending their lives struggling only to the benefit of others. It was understood that some day this would be your life as well. However, it was not your intention to become like them. After your father passed away in service to the King, you decided you'd had enough of peasant life and took your talents to the streets. As silent and light footed as you are, it was easy to pick the pockets of strangers and steal whatever other small trinkets you could find. However, aside from the moral disgust you feel stealing from other peasants - you honestly can't generate much income thieving amongst the lower classes. For years you attempted to find any possible way into the castle and your greatest targets. After many years of struggling, you did manage to find a way in. An impossibly well-hidden entrance that, as far as you know, you're the only one aware of. In fact, you probably know the layout of this castle and it's outlying villages better than anyone. Perhaps this is why you've been having such strange dreams lately. A woman's voice, all at once soothing and deadly... You've heard talk of a witch in the northern mountains. But, is it possible she's trying to contact you?

--- Age 23 - 28 ♀
--- Finn Archer
--- Played by: Aydre Silverwing

_ _ _ _ _| A Wise Sage |
_ _ _ _ _ _ _With the insight of a wizard

Perhaps you're simply one of the forgotten scholars who managed to survive the collapse of the Southern empire. Or maybe you truly are what they say - a wizard. Either way, you seem acutely aware of all that goes on and your predictions tend to be eerily accurate. You remember more than any of the others, too. Strangely, you have lived a much longer life than the average humans in this time period. In fact, you were advisor to the last King and the King before him. Perhaps even more before that - but, there's no way you could live that long... is there? Fortunately, you seem to have the Kingdom's best interest in mind. Though it is frowned upon by most, you freely offer to share your knowledge with anyone who seeks it. Royals, peasants, children, slaves; you make no distinction and show equal respect to all. Even the King holds your words in high esteem and though the others may find you unusual, they follow their monarch's lead. At the same time, however, you are secretive and mysterious in many ways. There are things that you know which you simply cannot share with the masses, as they simply could not handle the knowledge. You also know more than you let on about the witch; perhaps your paths have entwined once before.

--- Age 60 + ♂
--- Anselm Gerard Saer
--- Played by: Master Eragon

_ _ _ _ _| A Powerful Witch |
_ _ _ _ _ _ _With a plan for destruction

You have seen many things in your years of travel. Cities and villages burned to the ground, women and children brutalized and left for dead, men killing one another over something as insignificant as a gold coin. Yes, you've seen all of the violence and hatred... and you've loved every minute of it. You relish in those moments when true humanity reveals itself; the disgusting fate of human kind laid out before your eyes. Though it's taken many years for you to come to your final conclusion, you are now certain with the evidence backing you that mankind is inherently evil. It seems almost ironic to you that such a place as Althalos can exist. It's a contradiction to it's own nature of existence. Human beings simply cannot live in harmony with one another. Like the Sage, you are a woman from another time. You're once-friend turned enemy thrived during those times of human enlightenment. Now, it is your turn to flourish in the carnage of these dark ages. You must be cunning to accomplish what you've set out to do, however. Your target is the young lady who you will groom to accept the ideas and beliefs you hold. She will one day take the position of power and, in doing so, grant you control of this abomination of Kingdoms. First, you must succeed in capturing her however. The task would be rather simple without the ever present eyes of the sage. However, you must work around these conditions - perhaps you can utilize a stealthy young woman and a bitter man to do your bidding.

--- Age 45 - 50 ♀
--- Lady Ysmay of Ashdown
--- Played by: Spontaneous Spaz

_ _ _ _ _| An Arrogant Suitor |
_ _ _ _ _ _ _From a far away land

You come from a powerful Kingdom; the success and prosperity of your lands embedded in your spirit. Perhaps this knowledge gives you strength, but it also seems to corrupt your sense of humility. Your Kingdom does not need this alliance with Althalos - the latter has more to gain from the soon to be marriage. But you've heard tell of the young Princess Elizabeth's beauty and you always want the best of everything - after all, you deserve it don't you? So you've arranged to meet with the King and Queen over a period of several months. As the second son of your Kingdom, there is little chance for you to become King there. By leaving your home and moving to Althalos, you can secure your own crown and Kingdom. Though you aren't particularly dashing or handsome, you are a fierce warrior and have led many battles. You do not pity your victims and take pleasure in your power over them. Oftentimes, you use your strength and power as a royal to control others - but when it comes down to it, you're rather simple minded. Underlings fear you as your temper is a terrible thing to behold - you've been known to behead servants on the spot for their ineptitude! You go strictly by the class system and are easily offended by anything out of the ordinary. A fine warrior, but you are rather insensitive. Women are merely things to be conquered and you believe that they live only to serve you.

--- Age 31 - 36 ♂
--- Unnamed
--- Played by: No one
