I told my mother that my gas is getting shut off, and she said Well I guess you'll be taking cold showers, eh? I said I could just shower at her house and she said Hell no you aren't using my shower, and hung up on me.
My dad calls and says he won't help, because I don't have a job to pay back any loans he might give me. Which is why I need the job in the first place.
Logan calls and and guilts me twenty ways from sideways about how I'm trying to leave her and everyone else. Several other friends follow suit.
I tell my parents I went and took the testing to see what Army jobs I can get today. Mom just asks how much they pay. Dad tells me he's cutting all support if I associate myself with the government cause I'll get sand fleas, which I Googled and found out they are pretty icky. Logan tells me she's lost all respect for me for even considering it. Once again, several friends follow her.
Everyone that could help me told me to ******** off and help myself, and when I grabbed at the last rope I saw hanging near me, they all told me to ******** off again and not help myself that way and they'll abandon me and possibly set fire to the previously mentioned rope, cause I'm not doing things their way. I ask how to do things their way and they tell me to ******** off.
I know you can't please everyone, but what happens when you're in a situation to please no one, including yourself?

I think you can do it, and should do it. When you're making twice as much as everyone else and have a high status job, your friends will come crawling back.

Especially considering I tested into any job I choose, hell I could stay stateside if I let them chain me to a desk.

Exactly. And just cuz something's government doesn't make it bad. Doesn't make it good either, but it's just as good or bad as any other job, really.

I'm sitting outside the recruiter office using the internet from the car wash across the street - I thought he told me to be here at 12, but he said 1 apparently. Oh well, my battery is charged and I've got half a WiFi signal coming in stronger than at my coffee shop.

I'm sitting outside the recruiter office using the internet from the car wash across the street - I thought he told me to be here at 12, but he said 1 apparently. Oh well, my battery is charged and I've got half a WiFi signal coming in stronger than at my coffee shop.

So I got a 90 / 99 on the test today, was offered intelligence department positions on the spot.
At the same time, t-mobile called me and offered me the $14/hour job in Kansas.
The Army offered me my choice of pretty much any job I wanted, from infantry to intel to international man of mystery.
In one moment, in one decision, in one instant I saw doors opening before me I'd never looked at. I was winner of Big Prizes, Big Money, and I loved it. I just had to pick, door #1, #2, #3 or #4.
Door one was t-mobile. Safe. Sterile. Boring. A wise decision. Good pay. Good benefits. Kansas.
The #2 door, that was a cushy position in the Army. Camera man. Stationed in Germany or Japan or Italy. Somewhere beautiful. Working to produce videos for the Army website and similar things.
#3 was Army Intelligence. High pay. Low risk. Desk job? Next, please.
Door number four. Tracked Vehicle Repairer. Heavy deisel mechanic. Repair work on tanks and similar things. Big, big engines. Medium pay. Afghanistan. Engines. My oldest love, since asking for the go-kart I'm still waiting on for my fifth birthday.
I've never had such the opportunity to shape my life before. It was a little paralyzing.
I picked #4. Basic is in April.
