I see circles as a place where energy is contained, be this an entity or your energy et cetera. I also think that it helps to keep energy OUT, as in a protection circle.
The compass is used as a lens of power. It is also a point where one can travel between the worlds; it becomes the axis mundi, the pillar where one travels between the Upper world, the Middle world and the Under world. It is a meeting place of spirits and souls and powers. I tend to use the compass more than the circle. I will, however, use the circle within a compass for purposes of evocation (such as that of Vassago).

I'm not very familiar with these terms, and after reading what Angus wrote about them, I'd say I use... neither, I guess. Hard to say. I've never heard this kind of terms being used, so I don't quite understand them...

I've never heard this kind of terms being used, so I don't quite understand them... To the one that I serve A circle is what many neo-pagan witch traditions use. You draw a circle from north-east-south-west-north and as you draw you see yourself between the worlds. You then can call the guardians of the elements and proceed with your spell work. Compasses are something I am just now starting to learn about/. I will give my all

Loona Wynd I thought circles were also portals into the otherworlds... Do elaborate. I have never seen them as such. I have always looked at circle in the Ceremonial magic sense (which is basically I think how many eclectic witches use the circle). It was used to house energy and protect the magician from outside forces. Yes, what happened in the circle was "between the worlds" but I don't see the magic circle as a portal. I treat the compass as a microcosm to the universe's macrocosm. I usually use the compass only indoors. Rarely will I use it outside. Outside I will usually only make a statement of intent and then walk a round counterclockwise until I am properly "mazed" (which is a Cornish witchcraft term to mean "altered state of consciousness") then I will begin my working. However, this is normally only for a housle. I will use a more elaborate method for spell-work. Then again...I am rather spontaneous. I just go with the flow really. In my grimoire I have written down incantations that I sometimes say, but rarely do I keep with them XD And the use of a grimoire is also why I am hesitant now a days to even call myself a "Traditional Crafter" at all. My practices are a mixture of high and low magic that some might call witchcraft and only those that practice, say, Sabbatic witchcraft would call traditional witchcraft. Then again, I am not certain if the Cultus Sabbati calls themselves "Traditional" only in the sense that they have created a tradition within witchcraft with a Cainite mythos that I have so lovingly adopted to my own practices after reading the Pillars of Tubal Cain and Fallen Angels. Am I rambling? I'm sorry.

Circles are a way of bringing the other world here. So in that sense, Loona, you're right. If they're created properly, I mean. They're said to be... damn, what's that phrase they use. One of their primary purposes is to create a part of the otherworld here, anyway.
Compass seems to me very much like another way to use circles, just by a different name. I think it's a bit "omg this is TOTALLY OLDER" 1792 anti-Gardner crap, as in, "this is essentially very similar but if anyone tells me that I'll have a total tantrum". Though I don't know if Cochrane used them. It just seems like something he would have done. Valiente doesn't mention them at all.
Why would I need to create a portal to the otherworlds? There are a dozen ways to get there, I've never come across the concept of having to make a portal before. If I'm going somewhere unfamiliar I always ask my guide to lead me, and I remember that path in the future. The only use I can see for circles in this sort of situation is to protect the body while one is elsewhere.

To the one that I serve My circles are portals between the worlds. They help me access the higher or lower vibrations to align my mind and then contact the beings I am working with. Arcanist Angus I have never seen them as such. I have always looked at circle in the Ceremonial magic sense (which is basically I think how many eclectic witches use the circle). Loona Wynd shadowflameguardian Circle, I feel more protected in one. To the one that I serve Protected from what? I will give my all Protected from anything that could disturb my spellwork. It makes it easier for me to relax, concentrate and meditate. You know keep good things in, bad things out.
