I am in treatment currently, as I have been for many years, and I humbly believe I have a lot of good advice to give others... just basically telling others about the coping skills I use that I learned via Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (vs. Cognitive). Things such as Wise Mind (dialectical thinking vs. acting purely with your Emotion mind), certain kinds of awareness... etc.

I think it's a wonderful idea. It also warms my heart to see people still finding their way here. I parted ways from Gaia quite some time ago now, as events here led to my struggles with self-harm and with severe mental illness. I'm doing better now, but life has taken some drastic turns. I've learned a lot too and I think sharing that is important. smile

Just posting to make sure you know how generous this is. I've been having trouble with...things lately, and offering your experience to help others is a very refreshing thing to see. I really wouldn't mind trying a few different methods to help me through things, since what I usually use has been a bit hit and miss lately.

Awesome, yay! biggrin Here's sort of an intro.

I sort of divide it all up between attention and distraction. I was taught that your symptoms/problems/etc. need a certain amount of attention, and a certain amount of.. for lack of a better term, 'neglect' (which isn't really neglect; it's distraction). And we each need to find our own balance between the two, and that balance will change depending how we progress with our recovery, if and when we relapse, etc. So there's a lot of factors as play.

Attention Techniques, I'll call them, involve being directly active and participating in whatever you are experiencing, be it a situation or a side effect.

On the other hand, Distraction Techniques take our mind off all that crap. Gives us a break for a while.

If we concentrate on our problems all the time, we'll get worn out; and if we do nothing but distract ourselves, we're not making any progress. Hence, that balance between the two is necessary.
