((i thought this up on the night of the full moon))
Luna sat in the sky and began thinking. The war was over, the gods were all asleep, Earth was finally at peace. Luna sighed. Her job was done, there was no need of her anymore. Despite this knowledge, she had trouble accepting her fate. She had so many children upon the earth that to leave now they would think she had forsaken them. She loved her children and wanted them to remember her even though she was now obsolete. So she gathered her children to her and told them to remember and gave them each a piece of herself. It was a small piece but she had so many children that there was very little left of Luna when she was done. Even then, rather than resigning to her fate, she scattered the rest of herself upon the Earth in the places that most belonged to her; still lakes, crystal caverns, snowy peaks and mirrors. With that final exhalation of energy, she at last fell asleep and drifted in the void, awaiting her childrens call.

Mankind finally found the harmony between nature and technology and eradicated war, hunger, and all other things that had plagued them in millennia past. No sooner had a generation passed in this peaceful state then the moon disappeared. All the catastrophes that scientists had predicted came true; huge tidal waves, death of plants and animals, earthquakes. The earth lived on however, the flora and fauna grew and evolved as was their nature and mankind adapted as well. This new situation was soon forgotten as ever being new and the concept of a second celestial body was lost to legend.
however, within the ranks of the peaceful mankind was a different sort of people, the moonborn, who remembered Luna as she was and wished for the old days. Always searching for her in the night sky but finding only glittering stars. They carried the spark of Luna within them and were different from the Earthborn. This is their struggle, to reunite the pieces of the moon and place them in their rightful place in the sky.

for those of you that need a comparison of old ideas to new ideas, here's a rundown.
kinda like Highlander (but everyone is mortal)
kinda like Inu-Yasha (yet there are a LOT more pieces to pick up)
kinda like Wolf's Rain (without all the wolves)
the setting is quasi sci-fi, part fantasy. rather than think "either it's science or magic, make up your mind" think it's both. call it alchemy if you will.
