George Edward Alexander Common Room

A small but ornately decorated room serves as the common area for the students who reside within the George Edward Alexander Dormitory. Several large red cushioned sofas and chairs spot the room, and a large gold and red rug dots the ground before the enormous stone fireplace. A kitchen is off to the left side, fully equipped with food for a variety of unusual appetites and a staff perfectly willing to help satiate said appetites.

Students who reside within this dorm - MacKenzie, Raelin, Caitlin, Leo, Col, Jedrek, Miné, Alauniira, Edward, Jaden, and Narcissa.

((Any student who is a guest of another may also post here. This is to include any Roleplaying that occurs outside of the hallways or individual rooms of students.))

Jedrek had walked back toward his dormitory in an unusually lethargic manner, a bit worried about leaving Miné behind, but he knew that he couldn't fuss about her all the time. She was quite new to the world of magic, and a good part of becoming strong was to stick out the hard bits. He sighed casually as he walked toward to common room, sitting almost silently. He had seen so many new students that day. He knew it was not unusual for new students to appear during the school year given the very nature of the institution they attended, but it almost seemed like a rush seeing so many new people and feeling so many new voices spring up within his own mind. He really did need to meet with Rona to work on a way to better control his empathy.

He sat carefully on one of the nearby sofas and pulled out a small notebook, hoping to pass some time simply drawing a few items in the room. He would have to go into town fairly soon to prefer for the next earth magic class, perhaps he could pick up some paints as well. Regardless, he drew slowly, which seemed to be his speed this particular day, not taking notice of his surroundings other than his subject. He absentmindedly played with his own hair and tossed it back out of his eyes as he sketched a small flower arrangement on the table in front of him and hoped that Miné would successfully complete her lesson soon.

((feel free to jump in kids. Also, I vote we all take a trip into Windsor Village to buy our supplies, here here?))

Xyrn of the Oath:
Having been dismissed from her first class, Col took a step back from the professor’s podium, thus removing herself from the direct flow of traffic. As she began to saunter away from the clearing where the class was held, the girl trusted automatic reactions to free her from any harmful situations should the need arise, and turned her conscious attention to the supply list she now held her in her hands.

The girl was pleasantly surprised to find that any shopping that she would need to do later would be minimal. She knew that she had a mortar and pestle somewhere up in her dorm room, and was pretty sure that she had enough extra glass jars and acid vials in her own private store.

Col would need to go into town for the spade and clay though. This thought made a small frown appear on the woman’s face. She had never liked villages. Not so much for the people or sounds, but for the ease that someone could trail another person within its confines and no one would take any notice. Coltrane herself had exploited this aspect of them on a multitude of occasions, and knew from experience the effortlessness of the act.

A brown-white hair head snapped up from the paper when the owner realized that she had already reached her destination, the dorm building of George Edward Alexander, and, by the feeling of her feet, had been standing outside it for a moment or two. Transferring her supply list to the hand that still loosely held the cool, jagged form of her shard, the girl used her now free hand to push open the building’s door.

Whether it had been her usual one-track mindedness, which at the time had been focused on getting a bath and unpacking a little before having to meet other people, or simply her travel lag, Col was unsure of why she had not noticed the building’s décor upon her earlier visit to the place. Certainly her own room was not decorated as such.

Plentiful were the strong colors of scarlet and gold, which richly adorned most of the movable furnishings, which surprisingly enough to the girl, gave the space a comfortable feel, rather than the gaudy extravagance that she had normally seen the coloration work towards.

Pausing for moment to allow herself to fully take in her surroundings, Col let the door fall shut behind her.

((I’m game.))

Jedrek had been a bit lost in thought, a situation that was not entirely uncommon to him, when he heard the main door to the dormitory close with a strong 'click'. He raised his eyes slowly from his bit of paper as the half sketched gardenias peered back, waiting patiently to be completed. He noticed that the young woman who stood within the room was one of the new students that he had helped earlier that day. Col was her name if he was not mistaken. She had seemed a bit aloof, something that he had expected given his momentary read of her. He could not help but remember the sudden sting in his thigh and hoped that she harbored no malicious intent.

The exceedingly tall half-elf chose to remain seated as he raised his voice slightly and called out in his odd Polish-Elvish brogue, "Have you found everything you've been looking for?" The question sounded odd even as he spoke it, but he hoped she would understand what he meant.

Xyrn of the Oath:
Coltrane had just finished memorizing the floor plan of the entrance to her dormitory. On most normal occasions, she did this as first thing when she entered a room, as it had saved her skin multiple times. But as enrolling as a student at a school for magically gifted youth did not constitute the term ‘normal,’ the young woman did not scold herself too badly for such earlier error.

The sound of a voice from deeper within the room broke the girl’s thoughts. Unlike what one would have expected, Col did not jump at the sound, swing her head in the direction it had come from, and draw the knife from her belt. Earlier experiences from the path to the school had taught her that the people of this world did not value open hostility as those from her previous lives had, where it served as an polite, unspoken warning and demonstration of what one may be capable of.

Instead, Col opted to ignore her sudden awareness at company until the spoken words had died in the air. Then, she turned her head in the direction of the speaker. The woman’s hand moved so that it rested on her hip, conveniently behind where her hunting knife was sheathed. Her left knee bent slightly, so that what was

cherry peel:
Jedrek could not remove his feeling of slight agitation and paranoia that he could only assume was being projected from this new student. He gave her an oddly discerning look, his chocolate brown eyebrow piqued as he pushed a rather large chunk of hair out of his face. He could not help but be drawn to her thigh, knowing that something was there but not entirely sure. He had worked diligently with Rona of his telepathy over the years, but he felt like his empathetic powers tended to cloud it from time to time. He only sensed danger and a sharp pain. He figured it must be a weapon which put him ill at ease until he realized that he carried his fathers broadsword with him at all times. This was nothing different than what he assumed Coltrane to be doing.

Jedrek sighed quickly, almost laughing at himself trying to be so serious. He raised his eyes back up toward her own, noticing that she was keeping her distance. "Yes," he responded, "It's quite an unusual name, I know." He laughed gently, standing up and laying the small sketch pad onto the cushion beside him. He reached his arms up toward the ceiling. This was one of his favorite rooms. With the high ceilings and open nature of the room, he felt more diminished in his unusual height as his fingers did not brush the ceiling. He returned his gaze back toward the girl and spoke, "I hope my explanation wasn't too vague. Earth magic is a deeply personal experience, I think. It doesn't help that Professor Hammerforge laid that rather long list of supplies on us at the end. I wager we'll all have to go into town somehow in between our classes." He hoped his attempt at pleasant conversation wasn't boring her.

Xyrn of the Oath:
((Gaah. Sorry for delay.))

Jedrek’s mistrust in her was easily sensed by Col. Unlike many people the woman took no offense whatsoever at this. She was not sure she would trust herself. People who did that usually ended up dead.

Slight confusion touched her blue eyes when she noticed how the man’s eyes wandered. Col was used to men’s gazes wandering to her chest, but never her leg. It took the girl a moment to realize that Jedrek was looking at where her thigh dagger was sheathed. This conclusion just furthered her puzzlement however. The poisoned steel had slid back to a position on the back of her leg; a place that Col was sure would not be visible from Jekrek’s spot on the couch.

Any further consideration was interrupted however when the man’s gaze returned to her face.

The woman listened to Jedrek on the subject of his name, habit keeping her expression unreadable the entire time. When he paused though, a smile, either genuine or forced, rose to her lips.

“No more unusual than being saddled with a name intended for the opposite gender that means frisky horse,” Col spoke, unaware of her own unintended pun.

The smile faded from the girl’s mouth as she witnessed the half elf before her stand and stretch his arms up. Coltrane made a mental note to avoid direct confrontation with this one. If the need arose, the girl figured that she would need to resort to more means in which she was more comfortable with.

Still, these thoughts were schooled from Col’s gaze as she listened to her fellow students next words. “No,” the woman answered, her head shaking slightly, causing a loose whisp of hair to escape her braid and frame her fair face, “Your explanation was fine. I managed to find my shard without too much pain.”

While Col meant her last word in the metaphorical sense, her thoughts went to the hapless ant she had killed beforehand. Fleetingly, she wondered exactly how much literal pain it had entailed for the bug. Her mind shrugged these thoughts off however to be answered at a time when she experienced a supposedly quick death herself.

“I supposed that a trip into town will be necessary,” Col continued. “Provided of course that I find the place without getting myself killed in the process,” she added in her unusually pessimistic manner.

Jedrek could not shake the feeling of surreptitious deceit from Col, something that made him both uncomfortable but also highly concerned for her. He couldn't seem to help it - this odd desire to help other people. He only worried that his empathy was not always correct and that he might be diving in head first where and when he should not. Her demeanour was odd to him; at once guarded but playful. Her own joke about the name Coltrane seemed so out of character for her tense protection, but he welcomed the change and found himself smiling with her.

He felt a shift in the room when he stood, but he did not focus on it. Rather, his attention went toward making sure his stretch was worth it and worked out the slowly formed creaks in his long bones. He felt relief wash over him when she expressed comprehension for his rather vague instructions, and felt that relief show clearly on his face. He nodded agreement with her.

"I'm not looking forward to lugging ten pound blocks of clay back up that hill to the school. Although, I guess telekinesis would help.." His mind wandered back to his first encounter with Edward, where he had tried to help lighten his burden using his mind but was met with surprising hostility. He pushed it from his mind and returned his gaze to Col. "We should probably go soon, though. If I'm not mistaken, we have a class in Non-magical self defense fairly soon. Although, perhaps we should see if any other students would want to accompany us?"

He thought briefly about the self defense class. Harold Windsor had been teaching it for as long as Jedrek had been there, although he heard whispers that he would no longer be in charge of that class. He had heard practically nothing about the new teacher and looked forward to meeting them.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 12, 2006 7:34 pm

A thoughtful look crossed Col’s faced when the subject of telekinesis was brought up. From what she had heard about the abilities this gift entailed, the woman could imagine how useful it could be in such a task. For a brief moment, she wondered if she could do as Jedrek suggested to aid her walk back to the castle. The thought was dismissed before it got to far. While those who had assessed her range of talents agreed that she possessed telekinesis, she had yet to see any indication of the power, no matter her current mood or emotional intensity, pardon that on first unintentional burst of the power.

Besides, the ex-assassin thought to herself, what fun was it if an object moved across a space on its apparently own accord? Things were much more interesting when something was moved across a space via an elemental force.

All of these thoughts were banished from her brain though when Jedrek mentioned a trip into town... accompanied by other students.

It wasn’t that Col didn’t like people. In actuality, she thought them to be an excellent source of income. It was just that she did not like crowds of them; a crowd being defined as more than she could take out with ease.

But Col made no attempt to voice this, nor did she allow her over expressive eyes to voice it for her. “Sounds great,” the woman said with an enthusiasm she did not feel, “Have you any of our fellow pupils in mind?”

The woman did not allow herself to think hard on what she had just committed herself to. Coltrane shifted her attention to the upcoming class that Jedrek had just mention. She was rather certain that she was aware of its approach, on some level of conscious that is.

Non-magical self-defense; the idea bounced around the confines of her mind. Despite supposedly being a swift and silent assassin, Col had found cause to defend herself on a multitude of occasions. An inward smile appeared when the most notable, her first meeting with the man who would become her fiancée, came to her mind. While an attempt on one’s life would have put off most women, Col found this display of his competence as a leader of ruthless assassins only gave her the will to kill his then pregnant lover.

The idea of being put back in her environment, no matter how controlled, managed to put a genuine smile back on the cynic’s sweet face.

Jedrek felt that all of her comments hit him in an oddly juxtaposed manner. Many of her words felt hollow and merely there for show, but he still felt a strong genuine kindness flowing out of her. Perhaps it was an emotion that she did not even realize she was projecting. He tried to force all thoughts of reading out of his mind, thinking now more than ever that it was impolite to poke around the mind of a fellow student.

He had been quite worried about Miné. Ever since that unfortunate incident in the woods, she seemed to have grown more and more distant from him. Although they had class together, he barely felt like she was there. Still, his protective urges could not be squelched, and his first thoughts went to her when Coltrane questioned who else they might ask. Only, he hadn't seen her lately. He wasn't even sure when she had come back from class. He knew that she would need to purchase at least some supplies.

Other than his roommate, he was honestly unsure of who to ask. He figured most students would need something and might not know exactly where to go when they reached the village. Being a third year student, he hoped he could help with their queries, but he did not want to stretch himself too thin with too many promises and students.

His thoughtful eyes turn back toward Coltrane, as he looked down at the girl who stood over half a foot shorter than him and tossed chunks of chocolate brown hair from his eyes. "Well, I'd like to ask my roommate Miné," he started, his odd Polish-Elvish brogue struggling with the 'r' in roommate as he flipped the consonant off the back of his teeth. "To be honest, I don't even know who to ask.." He offered her a half-smile, a bit surprised at his lack of preparedness. "Perhaps it might be best to stick with a small group." His words reflected his own emotions, but he was almost certain she shared them for some reason. He tried not to think about it once again, wishing that he could turn off his telepathic and empathetic gifts like a faucet.

A small bit of the dread that the woman had been feeling ebbed from the corners of her overactive imagination at the notion of their party only being increased by one. Should she need to, Col was positive that she could take out two, even with the slight rust that had settled over her in her recent spell of unpractice.

The woman did not dwell on this stroke of fortune however. Col had learned the hard way that mulling over the good would only distract form the bad, which in turn could lead to carelessness and avoidable errors. These errors usually always meant unnecessary bloodshed, both from those who would not have otherwise been involved and herself.

“Yes,” Coltrane said in a tone that she hoped covered any emotion she might feel, “smaller numbers would probably be for the best. So where is this Miné?”

The Boy Least Likely To

PostPosted: Thu Jul 13, 2006 5:01 pm

Kimora sighed almost silently as she stood before the doorway marked clearly 'George Edward Alexander'. She felt so incredibly odd as she read her mothers note. just whisper my name to the door.. The thought echoed in her mind as she practically had to stifle her own laughter. What type of sorcery was this? True, she seemed to be gifted in the area, but who made the choice to ensure security measures such as that!

Ignoring her own inhibitions, she whispered to the door, hoping no one would hear and laugh, "Kimora Akello". The words had barely escaped her unusually large lips when the door swung open slowly.

An unexpected sight met her eyes as she stepped over the threshold. Two students were already in the room. One seemed normal enough, although she reminded her of their owners daughter in appearance. She was tall with finely colored hair and had a shrewd nature about her. The other was an entirely different story. Having been kept away from most civilization, Kimora had never seen a non-human before in her life. He seemed human enough, but his overwhelming height and even the way he appeared to present himself frightened her. His slightly pointed ears and fine, long hair seemed to be delicate and pure, things Kimora lost long ago.

She feared that her expression might be rude, so she tried her best to wipe it from her face before the two students got the wrong impression. Instead, her sky blue eyes stared bleakly forward as she spoke, "sorry to intrude.."

“Ask Miné what?”

The young woman slid around Kimora into the common room. She’d only meant to come down for something to eat, not to socialize, but she heard her name pass two sets of lips and curiosity overtook her. Besides, it would be rude to pass by her roommate without saying hello and while she was feeling slightly cold towards him, that was no excuse for a lack of manners.

Miné’s voice had grown hoarse from its lack of use so she spoke softly to hide it. She noticed Jedrek’s companion, a woman she recognized only from the earth magic class they’d just left. Miné hadn’t yet made her acquaintance, but she sensed Coltrane’s silent hostility and wasn’t sure if she even wanted to.

“I’m sorry. I heard my name,” she said, forcing herself to smile at the pair. Unbidden tinges of jealousy licked the corners of Miné’s mind. It was a girl Jedrek was talking to, and this girl that she didn't know was speaking her name. Part of her mind was screaming at the injustice, but she forced the thoughts away.

Miné hadn’t spoken much in class (not that she’d know what to say anyway) and she felt awkward speaking to them now…especially to Jedrek. She silently thanked the stars that she was able to obtain her shard on her own. The only other option would’ve been to as Jedrek for assistance and that would’ve been hard.

After class, she had lingered a while in order to return to the dorms alone. If she’d left with the group, one of them may have tried to spark a conversation with her and she was still feeling quite antisocial. It was easier to quietly avoid people than to have to get rid of them, anyway.

Miné pulled her long, plumb-straight hair over her shoulder with disdain. She was so used to the masses of corkscrew curls that usually adorned her head that her straight, unstyled hair seemed terribly mundane. There was nothing she could presently do about it, though, so she simply pushed the negative thoughts from her mind and crossed the room to join them.

Jedrek's breath caught in his throat almost immediately as he noticed a familiar set of ice blue eyes enter the room accompanied by hair a bit straighter than he recalled. Despite the sense of distance that had developed, Miné made him feel at home; a sense he had abandoned long ago. He gave her a gentle look, wishing he could repair what damage had been done when he noticed a new individual enter the room.

He diverted his gaze from Miné's kind face for a moment to study the new companion. She was relatively tall for a human girl, but he was most surprised by her skin tone. Jedrek had grown up in a small town in Eastern Europe and had never seen a human with skin that dark before. Not to mention, the nature of her hair was unlike any Jedrek had ever seen before. It was at once beautiful and base. Her clothing, too, was foreign to him. It seemed to be a robe of sorts, woven and embroidered with the colors of Windsor crest, ironically. He nodded to her kindly, answering Miné's question first.

"We've been discussing perhaps heading into the village to purchase some of the required materials for class. I thought it might be prudent to ask you to join us as well." He furrowed his eyebrows in silence, hoping he had not offended Kimora by not addressing her directly.

The woman’s eyes darkened as the common room took in two more occupants. Silently, Col wished that she had decided to equip herself with more weapons than the two knifes she wore visible and the sharpened spike she had tucked away in her boot. At least she had kept some poisons in her waist pouch she reminded herself to quell her anxiety. While none of what she carried was particularly deadly, they did bring about an extreme pain when splashed into the eyes or an open wound.

While Jedrek went about explaining their excursion into town, Col took the opportunity to size up their new companions.

The first thing that struck the ex-assassin was the color of the other girl’s skin. True, Col had heard of a few quite skilled in her old occupation and had seen the like while out on her various travels, but she had never actually met one. Though if she remembered correctly, she had never seen blue eyes on any of the race. The woman also noted that this newcomer would probably be a bit taller than her and was muscular.

Having decided that Kimora was not identifying her as an impatient threat, Coltrane moved on the girl who had entered just shortly after Kimora. By her entrance and first spoken words in her presence, the woman gathered that this would be Miné. The woman had blonde hair and blue eyes and, as was nearly everyone she had met thus far at this darned school, was taller than her own self by an inch or so.

As was her way, Col offered them each a courteous head nod as way of greetings. But otherwise, the woman remained silent.

The Boy Least Likely To

Kimora noticed the tall man nod toward her, but she could not hide her trepidation. She was surrounded by unfamiliar species and couldn't help but notice that all just reminded her of the life she had run from. She had not seen any other students of her ethnic persuasion, a fact that made her slightly uncomfortable. What if they didn't accept her? Or worse - what if she had actually been sold to the school, and it was all a cruel trick to think that she could learn? She gave a gentle nod back toward the man before turning down the corridor and heading toward the fifth room, knowing that it was hers.

Halfway there, her olfactory senses surprised her. "Lavender?" she heard her own voice whisper as she stood in the hallway and noticed thin strands of violet tinged smoke peek out from beneath the door to the ninth room. Being well versed in herbs and their properties, Kimora was elated at perhaps meeting a like-minded student in the midst of all of this insecurity and unfamiliarity. Regardless of the individual, Kimora remembered picking Elf Leaf, as her people called it, and using it in pipes. It represented love and purity. Anyone who smoked lavender surely represented these ideals. Timidly, Kimora walked toward the door and knocked gently.

Miné smoothed her skirt beneath her and took a seat beside Jedrek. She noticed his distraction and followed his line of sight to Kimora. Growing up in a busy port city she had seen all sorts of people, including those of Kimora’s complexion. She did not find her strange or different in the least, and therefore didn’t understand why Jedrek and Coltrane seemed to be so interested in her.

Just as she was going to ask Jedrek why they were studying her like that, Miné heard Kimora murmur something before turning and leaving the common room. She began to regret not introducing herself, but as the school year had only just begun she knew she would have many more chances to meet everyone.

“A trip into town?” Miné asked, diverting her attention back to Jedrek. She skillfully kept her anxiety from her voice, although she wasn’t sure if she could escape Jedrek’s empathy.

Join them? It would be her first real time spent with Jedrek since the incident in the forest. Her thoughts kept returning to her behavior in the hospital wing afterwards. She still had no idea how she could be so stupid. Just the memories made her want to bury her face in her hands and whine. It was hard to look him in the eyes after that, but she knew she couldn’t run forever.

“And I was the first you thought to ask? I am flattered, Jedrek,” she spoke coyly, flashing a grin that was much more genuine. His name rolled off her tongue and her mottled accent made it sound even more exotic and foreign. “I am glad my name came to your mind, actually. I would rather like to get off the campus and go shopping. I’m sure there is something I need.”

Miné turned her frosty eyes on Coltrane and examined her thoroughly. She could almost feel the cynicism radiating off the woman. It put her off, but she figured if Jedrek associated with her then she certainly couldn’t be too bad. It seemed everyone at the school had their quirks anyway.

Again, she found herself playing with her hair. She drew the entire mass over her shoulder and drew her short fingernails through it. Its lack of a style made her extremely self-conscious. The simple cascade of dark amber was so unextraordinary and therefore so unbefitting of her. Miné only felt pretty when done up like a porcelain doll, but she hadn’t taken care of herself over the last few days. She was stuck with the misery of feeling plain until she could get back to her dormitory and do herself up like some sort of mannequin.

“Jedrek, are you going to introduce me?” she asked softly, nudging his arm and nodding towards Coltrane. A subtle, expectant smile graced her pale lips as she dropped her hands to her lap and away from her hair. She would only make it worse if she continued to play with it, so instead of dwelling on the scorn she held for her straight hair she opted to distract herself by making this new girl’s acquaintance.

Jedrek looked at Miné for a moment, noticing her genuine reaction to him. He hoped that somehow the two of them might be able to put their slightly awkward past behind them given the unusual circumstances. He mirrored her actions briefly, fidgeting with his own hair as she placed hers strategically over her shoulder. He sighed and spoke calmly, "Well, perhaps it might be best to postpone the trip into the city," he spoke with a hint of prescience as the howling of a wolf echoed the building.

"I think it might be wisest to go to all of our classes first and discover all the items we need to procure." He paused again as it seemed the howling had gotten a bit stronger. "This somehow seems like something a teacher would do... Should we follow it?" he questioned, piquing his eyebrows to suggest a childish sense of adventure that he had not yet shared with Miné.

Slightly dissapointed at the loss of his guiding touch, Mackenzie was pleasantly surprised when he opened the door (she could hear the faint squeak of the otherwise well oiled hinges and feel the gentle warmth of the inside air).

"Ladies First."

definetely something in the water.
Mackenzie stepped past Jaycee into the common room. Her feet stuck slightly on the flagstones but she was no longer dripping. She didn't even bother listening for the echo that would outline her view of the room. Instead, she called up that fleeting image from her first night at Windsor, she didn't know why she should but she trusted it. She knew she couldn't actually see, and had probably just been overly tired and imagining things, but she plotted her path to her room based on that memory.

"Thank you Jaycee." She said turning back to face him and removing the cloak, garment, whateveritwas and offering it back. "It was foolish of me but I appreciate your assistance. I can manage on my own from here." It was sort of a formal thank you but somehow his gentlemanly behavior made the situation seemed to call for more decorum.
