No seriously, the thought of not having any idea how to play never occured to me when I got my bass last Christmas.
I'm the nubbiest nubby bass nub in the entire world.
If anyone could recommend a site for getting started or show me the basics themself, it'd be awesome. domokun

I don't know about sites, but what helped me get started was to hang out with my musician friends and have them show me the basics, and then how to read tab.
Once you become pretty profecient, go over to Warwick's website and read their coloums, they're pretty good.

Active Bass is a nice site with a couple of lessons and tutorials that can help you learn. But the best way to do it is how Aahz said it, and just get together with some friends that are into the whole "playing" music thing. It definitely would make your learning experience more fun and not so much as a chore.

You could just get some TABs and read them when you learn to read them.
A good book you could get is "Bass Guitar for Dummies". I have that book and it has a lot of scales in you can learn and a CD so you hear what it should sound like. It also has a whole section about asseceries you could and the best way to go about buying a Bass and amp. You could also go to melbay.com and order some good books. I can tell you some good practice things to develop technique, just PM me and I'll tell them to you.

If you wanna run in Shogun Drizzit's way (which is MY recommendation) go look at my tutorial I wrote in the sticky.

Then if you feel comfortable enough, I also explained a basic blues progression that will get you comfortable with expanding your ability.

Just listen to some easy songs to play at first in the styles that you like, and give em a go. I always recommend that performers look up jazz as well, because it will make music a lot easier if you can understand it.
