Yeah, but the manga's not going as er... as slow as I had hopewd. It's got amazing art, but it would have been nice if there was more character devlopement. Maybe that's just how the gbook was thouh, so the anime might have traslated just as well as the manga.

as far as i know, the novel is the best. things like City Devouring was explained in more detail, the hougus that Friagne used are also explained more in detail other than what is shown in the anime, and Alastor is actually summoned in the first book. and the fact that Shana has enough capacity to summon him is also revealed too. its so different from the anime.

Well, J.C. Staff does have a habit of screwing around with things quite a bit, but still keeping these things lagely entertaining, so things are nearly bound to be different. ALOts of animation studios screw with novels quite a bit though.

I don't mind as lon as it's entertaining, and J.C. Staff is almost always entertaining.

yes. thats true, but the one thing that hate about the anime is the fact that in the novel and the manga, Yuji is cool and collected, and had no fear of disappearing. he was also more considerate of the things he did wrong, and was always helping others whenever he can, even if he had to make sacrifices.
but in the anime, he is so idiotic. he is whiny, always pessimistic, and lazy too.

Really? I didn't get that impression at all. I felt he was strong willed, brave, and overall optimistic. Just a little bit prone to confusion in such an extreme situation.

but thats the thing. he shouldnt look confused or anxious even in the extreme situations.
in the novel, he was accepting to the idea of being used as bait to lure out Friagne. not only that, Yuji figured out most of the concepts concerning the City Devouring by himself. he is rarely confused in the novel. just unable to help Shana initially with things like fighting.
Also, Alastor is very loose and socialable in the novel too. he jokes around and acts more loosely than Shana. that is really really odd. how did the animation studios screw that up? like one example is when Shana and Alastor find out that Yuji is called as Yu-chan by his mother. Alastor goes and makes a funny comment like responding to him with "What is it, Yu-chan?" and such. that is hilarious.

Yes, figuring out concpts by oneself is great and all. But they can't as easily depict that in the anime, and the viewer wont understand the mechanics unless they explain it in some other way... so they have people do explanations.

... this conversation is going in the same direction as the Suzumiya novel vs Suzumiya anime debate. lets just stop here.

From the way Enpatsu is describing the novel version of Yuuji, it seems that he accepted the idea of being a torch far quicker then in the anime and manga. I've always thought that Yuuji in the anime was closer to the average person, as it should take time to come to terms with major changes in a person's world view. Yuuji is a quick learner, but its understood that intellectually he's only an average guy. I mean, he did learn to sense powers of existence, and could even locate the pinions that the Aizen twins made; something that Margery and Marco were unable to do.
I guess I just think that since Shana is the heroine, that Yuuji shouldn't be a combat support type of person. He's supposed to be there for emotional support and to act as a moral compass.
Also, I like the manga's take on the series, as it seems to take on a more light hearted view of the series (watching Keisaku and Eita spy on Yuuji and Shana was pretty funny, as well as Shana's reaction during the bedroom scene, poor Yuuji crying )
