The M14 is an american made Select Fire Assault riffle firing the heavy 7.62 mm NATO cartridge at a rapid pace. It roots go back to post WW2, when troops required an improvement from the standard issue M1 Garand, and Semi-auto rifle with a small magazine and low portability. The M14 remained the primary infantry weapon in Vietnam until it was replaced by the M16 in 1966–1968.
Problems were found due to bad accuracy at long distance, and heavy recoil due to the unnecessarily large bullets. However, unlike its replacement, the M16, M14s almost never had operating failures, and had greater stopping power the the M16. Also, the M14 is considered the "Best Close Quarters combat rifle" against the M16. This statement was based on a study of using the m14 and m16 as bludgeons. The M16's spring loaded plastic stock would shatter if used as such, while the wooden steel reinforced stock of the M14 could deliver serious damage without failure.
The M14 was perfect for what it did. In the end, this controversial weapon still remains an active tool in the military today.
