One blustery November night I went to Borders and purchased a little book known as Les Miserables. I JUST finished reading this 1462 page novel. I bought it on November 27th 2010 and finished at exactly 9:41pm on Thursday February 17th, 2011.
It was the most beautiful thing I have ever read. The story is just so fantastic. Words alone cannot properly express my wonderment. I'm just...astounded. Marius and Cosette were annoying as s**t and the long boring parts made me wanna bang my head against a brick wall, but it was so worth every ounce of frustration.
The writing style of Hugo was exquisite. The characters were as loveable and endearing as their musical counterparts, with the exception of Thenardier and Madame Thenardier. Eponine might've been crazy but I will always always love her. I have a new found fondness for her little sister Azelma. Gavroche was as adorable and loveable as ever. And Les Amis de l'ABC were awesome.
My favorite part of this masterpiece was the epilouge when Valjean is on his deathbed. Beautiful stuff people. I was so deeply moved that I didn't have it in me to cry. Simply because crying would've distracted me from the glorious words that I was reading.
Now as I listen to soundtrack, the notes of that fantastic sweeping score and the lyrics have a much greater and deeper meaning. I have a whole new appreciation for this truly great musical.
I have finished the famed novel and this Saturday I will be seeing the legendary musical at the Cadillac Palace in Chicago. At some point in time, I will finish watching the anime. (Yes, there's an anime too.)
Everyone should read this book. I don't care how painfully long it is. Trust me, it's well worth it.
