OMG. THE MUSICAL IS SO ANTI-PERONIST IT MAKES ME WANNA CRY. Ok. Yeah. I'm not a Peronist, I am however a fan of Eva, so thusly.. I need to support it on some level. So, Omg. I was listening to a couple songs from the stage production (with Patti LuPone) and it was SO WEIRD! First of all:Omg Anti-Peronistism at its finest. LuPone makes Eva seem so cruel and harsh and horrible. I mean I know that the woman could be a real beeyotch, but geez!! And in my opinion, there was a real lack of emotion behind LuPone's voice. But that could've been on purpose. I dunno. There's this thing called sympathy,I dunno know if you've heard of it. Eva wasnt a complete b***h you know. Madonna was WAY more sympathetic towards Eva. Another reason why I prefer the movie.
Second:Holy Crap. A lot of the songs are in a different order or are arranged differently. Take for example" Another Suitcase In Another Hall". Eva sings "Hello and Goodbye"(from the movie) and Peron's old mistress sings the actual song ( Another Suitcase). Madge sang both in the movie.
I dunno, all this is probably b/c the movie got to me first, and not the production. I loved the movie, and then I loved Eva. ^^
Don't get me wrong. I love 'Evita'. It's just both versions send out some serious anti-Peronist vibes. It's just not as bad/apparent in the movie b/c Madge gave Eva some much needed sympathy. *Love Madge*
I mean I didn't catch it, the first time I saw the movie, or when I first started listening to the music, but after I read a book about Eva, I was able to listen to the songs and catch the little digs on Eva and Peronism.
And further more, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice (no offense, cuz I do love them)kinda half-a$$ed their research. Half the stuff they wrote about never happened. It was never proven that Eva went out, or even knew Magaldi. It's never been proven that Eva prostituted herself. And I know for a fact that Eva DID NOT rally to get Peron out of jail. She did not have any established political connections at that time. It was the descamisados who rallied for Peron's release. Also, the real reason that Eva did not go to England during her Rainbow Tour was not due to exhaustion. That was just an excuse. The real reason was because the Queen said that she would be unable to see Eva on the days she requested. Eva felt as if she was being snubbed and made up an excuse on why she couldn't come.
But I guess I should give them a break because even today, so much about Eva remains a mystery and there are a lot of myths. You just have to know how to separate fact from fiction. When researching info on Evita, look at your source and make sure it's not partisan or biased. That's really important b/c a lot of people say a lot of different things about Eva. She's one of those people you either love or hate. You're only indifferent if you don't know who she was.
Seriously. Evita fans out there, pick up this book: Evita: The Real Life of Eva Peron. (I've read it. It's unbiased and non-partisan. It tells it like it is. Good and bad.) Read it, and listen to the lyrics. I guarantee that you'll be able to pick up on the anti-Peronist sentiments.
I'm not trying to defend Peronism or anything like that, it's just that I DESPISE things that are partisan. I'm a political gal, so I know all about that. Trust me. I like factual things. I want to know the truth. B/c literally almost every movie synopsis I read, or documentary I watch always throws in their digs and I think its dumb b/c half the stuff they spew out is completly untrue. So just be careful and try to find a happy medium.
I don't love Eva for her policies/ideas. I love her for who she was. She's such an inspirational figure to me, no matter what they say about her. I love her as a person. ( It also helps that I'm as into politics as she was. Lol *wink*)
So...that's my rant. Goodnight and Thank You!( for reading this!. Lol. That was a song title. HeeHee.)
