I don't get why some parents don't trust their kids online. Technically, I'm not supposed to be online right now, my mom is picking up my sister. I mean, come on, teach them right, and they'll know not to be stupid.
I'm online all of the time now that my mother FINALLY let me get my own aol screenname so I could get online. I don't give away my last name unless I already know them, I don't give them phone numbers or addresses, I don't set up accounts that require me to do so. If you learn the dangers of online use, you never give that bad stuff away, just email.
You also learn so many things online. If you're not able to get online when your parents aren't home, there's less time to explore. Who knows what you'll find when you surf the web. You may find things that you'll never want to see again (hey, gives you a fair warning where not to go), and you may find something that you'll absolutely love. There should be a motto or something. Something like "You never know what you'll find when you go online," but it would have to be less corny.
Online, you also meet people that, until you show them a picture, they can't judge the real you. Ask some of my friends, ever since I changed my avi, I look nothing like it. My hair is a different color and a completely different length, so no one can judge me by the way I look. C'mon. Get real.
You can make so many new and inspirational friends online because you never would have made them any other way. It's a win-win situation if you know how to be careful.
