How to speak Hmong Lesson One. "Vowels"
All right class, lets begin.

Phonetic Hmong
1. tee ('pile up')
2. too ('son')
3. tay ('field')
4. taw ('hill')
5. bah ('help')
6. nih ('he/she/it')

9. dow how ('head')
10. hy ('speak')
11. neeah ('mother')
12. mooah ('to sell')
13. Hmong ('Hmong')
14. Cheng ('truly')
Notes
1. As in the word meet
2. A long U, as in boot.
3. Like ay in say or the ey in they.
4. Something like the o in lost or augh in caught.
5. As the a in father.
6. No english equivalent. The sound is similar to a combination of "oo" and "ee" place in the center of the mouth, as in French vowel sounds.
7. As the e in let; usally not a stressed syllable.
8. Like u in duck; usually not a stressed syllable.
9. Like ow in plow or the ou in the mountain.
10. The sound of y in the sky or ai in Mai Tai.
11. As the vowel conbination in be a sport.
12. As in the combination give you a check.
13. The sound is somewhere between the ong of long and ung in lung.
14. Similar to the eng in length; it may also vary in sound.
