“Mom…I don’t feel like going to school this morning…I’m just…I don’t know…depressed……I’m amazed something like this could ever happen hear…especially to someone I know…” I sighed deeply then turned over in my bed, “Just give me a couple days to get over it…”
“Okay dear…if you need anything just let me know.”
“I will mother…” She closed the door and went back to making breakfast for her and dad. I shot up quickly and started to get dressed. I slipped some jeans on, then a white tank and I grabbed my jacket. I slid open my sliding glass door that leads to the outside and I took off running. I ran until I was out of breath. I started to breath heavily then my breathing returned to normal. “DAMNIT!” I screamed as loud as I could. “I hate my life! Two of my ******** best friends have died ********! What if I’m next…?” I said to myself as I was walking down the riverside, trying to calm myself down.
“Hey! Cami! Is that you?” I heard somebody yell from down the pathway. I twirled my head around and looked behind me.
“Shelby…?” I turned around and I started to walk towards him, slowly at first, then realizing that it really was him, I started to run again. I hugged him tightly. “I haven’t seen you in forever!” I said happily.
“Wait…Cami…why aren’t you in school?”
“Well…umm…you remember Ame and Lela right?” I started to cry again. “Shelby! They both were murdered!” I dug my face into his chest and started to cry even harder.
“Its ok Cami…I’m here for you…” He wrapped his arms around me until I was done crying.
“Thank you…” I said solemnly, mascara and eyeliner made black streams down my cheeks and his gray hoodie had a little bit of a black smudge on it from where my eyes had been.
“So…how did they both die?” He said, walking along with me, his hands in his pockets.
“I don’t know how Ame died but Lela was torn apart by…something.” A tear rolled down my cheek again but I quickly wiped it away. “I can’t figure out why this stuff is happening to me…what did I ever do?”
“I don’t know…but lets just hope it doesn’t happen to anyone anymore.”
“But what if it does Shelby-pie…what if it happens to you…what if it happens to me, or Andrew, or Dustin, or even Randi! I don’t think whoever is doing this likes me very much or else he wouldn’t be targeting me!” I took in a deep breath then let it out slowly. “I’m sorry, I’m just scared.”
“I’ll protect you Cami…I promise I will…” When he said that I smiled and blushed slightly.
“Thanks…” I knew he wouldn’t be able to, especially if the thing that killed Lela came after me. “What if you can’t protect me though?”
“I’ll do my best Cami-poo…” He said, wrapping one of his arms around my shoulders.
I smiled again but then I stopped. I couldn’t help but worry and wonder about what was going to happen to me, or anybody else that I was really close with. I looked down at the ground as we walked and I watched the leaves crunch beneath my feet. It reminded me of finding Lela. The image of her body came back into my head and both my hands flew onto my head and I gripped my hair hard.
“Damnit!” I yelled again. “Go away already! I hate this!” I started to breathe heavily again then my eyes flew open and I just stared at the ground again, blankly, my hands back at my sides. A few tears fell to the earth beneath me but they stopped soon after. “I don’t know what’s happening to me…every time I see Lela’s body, just lying there, head ripped off and body scratched and bit up…I just loose my mind. Even the first time I saw it…it bugs me…and I have a feeling that it will happen to many more of my friends…like a chain almost.”
“Stop worrying, I’m sure everything will be fine.”
“Shut up okay? Nothing’s going to be fine…they’ll just keep on killing my friends until I’m the only one left! They’re even going to get you!” I started to run the opposite way, into the woods, sobbing, just like before.
I sat down on a stump in a little clearing. I always used to go there when I was littler, but I haven’t gone there since now. I sighed sadly then I put my hands over my face and screamed as loudly as I could. Almost the whole neighborhood could hear me. I picked up a rock and smashed it against a tree as hard as I could and when I let go, the rock was stuck in the bark.
I heard something rustle behind me in a bush and I jumped and ran to the other side of the clearing. “Who are you?” I asked, just out of instinct. Whatever it was, it turned around and ran the other way. A sigh of relief slipped out then I heard something fall and a deer’s squeal. I ran out of the clearing and away from the noise, back towards Shelby. I didn’t know what had come over me earlier but it was over and done with…hopefully.

...and so you're drinking in your room
to make it all go
it didn't end too soon
you've got the next one
you're holding on too long
you've got to let go
your other love is gone
and you know...
