Jake Shimabukuro is a Japanese musician from Hawaii who plays the ukulele, and he's a master of it. He uses it to play hulas, rock songs, flamenco, anything! And while he's doing it, he moves with the music, sometimes jumping in the air and doing crazy scissor kicks. There's something about it that is just so absurd. Here's this guy, poring out passionate, beautiful music, and then he get's really into it and jumps around, but it's all on the tiny little ukulele.
He's basically got a cult of fans in Japan who worship him, selling out any concert he does anywhere in the world. The only reason we were able to get tickets is that my mom joined the fanclub, which gives priority to people seeking tickets. She got a shirt for joining, which was too big. But she cut out the logo and sewed it onto a different shirt. And when we were waiting for the show to start, we noticed that Jake was at a booth selling CD's and talking to people. My mom rushed over there and got her shirt signed, and then they took a picture of her for the website. How crazy is that!?
At one point in the concert, he told us the lyrics to a song he was about to play (becuase he doesn't sing). They went something like this:
Your love is better than ice cream,
It's better than anything I've tried.
Your love is better than ice cream,
And everyone here can fly!
It's better than anything I've tried.
Your love is better than ice cream,
And everyone here can fly!
