Talk to the hand.
The Rip in Time/Space (A KH x STH fan-fiction)
Destination One – Destiny

Beep…beep…beep…

“Cream, could you get me a Philips screwdriver? I need to tighten these screws, or else it’ll fall apart.” A yellow-orange two-tailed fox said, peeking up from behind a machine covered with a tarp at a female lop rabbit that was tan-furred with orange tips and bangs.

“Sure!” The rabbit, Cream, said as she walked over to the toolbox. “How big?”

“Just bring one here and I’ll tell you if it’s good enough.” The fox replied, slipping back under the tarp.

“Yes, sir!” Cream said, and then pulled one out. “Why can’t I work under the tarp, Tails?”

The fox, Tails, peeked out and took the screwdriver off her hands. “Believe me, you don’t want to be under here, ‘Sides, your mom would kill me if you came home looking like you’d been hit by thunder.”

He slipped out and brushed his bangs back, sighing softly. “Alright, Cream. Throw off the tarp, let’s rare it up.” He held a controller in his hand, and when Cream threw off the tarp, he pushed the button to activate it and…

The machine did nothing at first, then begin to slowly pulsate, like a beating heart. It was cool, but also kinda’ creepy.

“Something’s wrong.” Tails said, looking at it. “It’s not supposed to be moving like that!” He ran over and covered Cream as the machine pulsated faster and faster, then blew up, sending debris everywhere, some of it hitting Tails’s back and pushing him closer to the floor.

Cream remained unharmed, but Tails, she could see, was badly wounded. “Um…” She looked at him. “Should we call this a failure?” She looked where the machine was and her eyes widened. “Uhhh…Tails?”

“Yeah?” He asked, and then slowly sat up to see a strange keyhole-shaped portal where the machine was. “Whoa…” He stood up and pulled Cream further away. “We have to get Sonic before we try anything else.”

Elsewhere, in the other side of the strange keyhole…

“Sora, Riku, Kairi! Come on in, we’re having ca~ke!” A teenager in a yellow jumpsuit cried, waving to three teenagers by the Paopu Fruit tree. The boy in the middle looked over at her and sighed. “Awww, cake? Can’t you save us some? We’re kinda’ busy talking out here!”

“Tidus said that if you don’t come in, he’s gonna eat your piece, Sora!” A teenage boy dressed in a sleeveless white shirt and funky looking pants said, his blue sandals in his hands.

The boy in the middle, Sora, shrugged and flipped over to the other side of the tree. “Okay, fine. C’mon, Riku, Kairi.” He tapped the shoulders of the platinum-blond-haired boy next to him and the red-haired girl on his other side and walked towards the cabin, where the girl and boy waited.

“Uhhh…Sora?” The girl, Kairi, said as she pointed to the sky. “Is that…”

“A Keyhole.” The other boy, Riku, said, finishing Kairi’s sentence.

Sora blinked and walked over. “Yeah, strange. Why is that here?”

“I don’t know, but it just appeared…” Kairi said, looking at him. “Should we seal it?”

“I’m sure there’s some reason it’s open, and the King’s letter said nothing about it, so we should just leave it alone until Heartless or Nobodies start popping out of it.” Sora joked, and then turned away. “Seriously, though. If it were dangerous, it would’ve done something by now.”

Riku nodded. “I guess you’re right. C’mon, Kairi.” He beckoned for her to follow as they walked inside. Kairi hung back a bit to watch it, then shrugged and followed.

Later that night, the Keyhole did in fact drop out something. Several figures fell in and splashed into the ocean. Some went straight out to land while other had to be helped out of the deeper parts first.

Tails stepped onto the shores of Destiny Islands and brushed back his soaked bangs. “Where…are we?” He asked, looking back at the others, who’d just cone to shore.

“I don’t know.” A pink hedgehog said as she rung out her long hair. “But, if I don’t find a shower soon, I am going to scream. Why didn’t we just take a ship? It’s plenty big enough!”

“Because we weren’t sure if it’d close after one went through or not.” A red echidna said, ringing out his dreadlocks as well. “Looks like it’s still open though, so that’s a good sign.”

“Still, it might be a good idea to have someone here to guard it, and make sure no one locks us in.” An electric-blue hedgehog said, shaking water off him at super speed. His silhouette was framed nicely by the moonlight as he dashed off to a high vantage point to look around. “I dunno where we are, Tails. But, it certainly ain’t Oz.”

“Hardy-har-har.” Tails said, rolling his eyes. “What makes you think someone’s gonna lock it, Sonic?”

“Uhm…keyhole…key…lock?” The blue hedgehog, Sonic, offered, and then zipped back to them. “Let’s just leave someone to guard and then look around. I’m sure there’s a reason we’re here…”

“Uhh, we fell in?” The pink hedgehog said, crossing her arms and looking around herself.

“...And we have to find it.” Sonic finished, as if he didn’t even hear her. “But, where? And where can we sleep?”

Tails spun his two tails into the air and lifted off the ground. “I’ll scout around, Sonic, and tell you if there’s anywhere decent.” He said, and then flew off to check out any buildings he could spot.

He set down in front of a shed connected to a cliff with a tree by a bridge and opened the door slowly. “Hello? Anyone in here?” He asked, then blinked at the strange, glowing…shiny in the corner. Yeah, “shiny”. What a weak word, but he had no idea what else to call it. He walked over to it and placed just his hand in it and he suddenly felt refreshed.

Refreshing shiny aside, this place wasn’t any good for sleeping. All it had was the shiny and stairs, leaving no room for six Furries to sleep. He stepped out and closed it the shed, shrugging. ‘Next place.’ He thought, taking to flight again.

In his room, Sora had been gazing at the stars and imagining Kairi dancing with him to slow, sleepy music when something flew past his eyes and broke his image. ‘What was THAT?!’ He thought, getting out and snatching up his Keyblade. ‘Should I call Riku and Kairi first? Nah, it’s just one!’

Sora slipped out of his room and went down to the place Tidus and he used to practice all the time to see a small fox lying down, exhausted. He wouldn’t find this so strange – I the fox wasn’t wearing clothes, gloves and shoes. And yet, he didn’t look like a Heartless.

‘Maybe a Nobody?’ He thought, prodding the fox gently with his Keyblade. Nothing happened, so he shrugged and thought, ‘Maybe I’m just dreaming. I’ll go back to my room and sleep.’

He hadn’t taken two steps when he heard the swish of a tail – doubled – right behind him. He turned quickly and almost hit the fox in the head. Almost, as in he would’ve, had the fox not dodged quickly. On two legs.
Oookay. Either he had too much cake, or was dreaming.
“What are you staring at?” The fox asked, and he looked over his shoulder. “No one’s there.” He touched the Keyblade timidly. “What’s this?”

“Do-wah-it’samine.” Sora said, quickly putting the Keyblade away. “Who’re you, kid?”

“Um…Tails. And you?” Tails asked, looking up at him.

“I’m…Sora.” Sora said, smiling slightly. Yeah, talking to the dream-kid. Great plan. ‘Have I gone psycho, or is this really just a dream!?’ He thought, thought he still kept up with his smile.

Tails held out a hand. What, was he begging now? “Nice to meet you, Sora.” He said, grinning cheerfully.

Sora took his hand and shook it. “Nice to meet you too…Tails.”

Tails took his hand back and place set it at his side. “I’m trying to find a place for me and my friends to sleep. Do you know of anywhere?” He asked, tilting his head slightly.

Sora smiled. This really was just a dream, after all. “Sure. You can all stay in my room.” He said, not realizing that this was reality, and that he’d just let strangers stay in his room.

“Thanks! Where is it? I’ll go tell them as soon as you tell me.” Tails said, nodding and walking alongside Sora.

“It’s right in here.” Sora said, leading him to his room. “See? You can go ahead and bring your friends in, I’m going to sleep ahead of you.” He lay down on the bed, yawning as he did. ‘Wow. I didn’t know you could yawn in dreams, too.’

“Thank you, Sora.” Tails said, smiling softly. “I’ll see you in the morning, then!”

“Right, in the morning…” Sora mumbled half-asleep.

Tails smiled and ran off to tell everyone the good news.

“Alright. So, Knuckles, you take first night. Then Rouge, then me, then Amy, then Tails, then Cream and Cheese. Okay?”

“Got it.” Everyone said, and then they left Knuckles to hide at the beach near the keyhole, ensuring no one tried to lock it.

To be continued.
