The Kitsune Legend -Kisho's Story

Part 1

The first thing he truly knew was voices. The voices were loud and intruding in his world of warm, darkness. The newborn cuddled closer to the flank of his mother, a loving and secure feeling washing over him. The words were impossible to understand, and confused him on so many levels; he eventually gave up even trying to figure them out. He yawned softly, and there was a lull in the voices, as the two adults turned to look at him. Eventually they started again, the first voice deep and frightening, with a tinge of malice only an adult male could bring.

"His name should be Masakazu."

The second voice was soft and whispery; a reminder of the even darker times, when it had murmured soothing nothingness. It was a voice he snuggled up to now, wishing to escape the first voice with her presence.

"I like Kisho."

"He should be named after me."

"Kisho is a good name. It suits him."

"No. If he is called Kisho then I will have no honour in his birth. Then no-one will know he is my son."

"But they will know. They will see it in his eyes."

"I would rather Masakazu."

A deep sigh, and a gentle stroke. There was silence for a little while, except for the occasional shuffle of a body or the distant sounds from outside. When the soothing mother voice spoke again, it was sharper, nearly making the little kit whimper.

"His name is Kisho. I gave birth to him, so I name him."

"He is my son!"

There was a snarl, and this time the cub did whimper, unsure where to turn. There was an annoyed noise, and he felt an arm pull him closer to his mother's warm side. Small whispers assuring him of his safety ensued, and he allowed himself to relax, forgetting his earlier fright.

"He might be your son but I doubt you'll have anything to do with him once he has grown."

There was an uncomfortable pause before the angry, deep voice answered, though the voice now sounded on the verge of giving up.

"I don't need to be apart of his future. All he needs to know if who his father is, so he can grow up to be proud and honour the family name."

"I don't think he needs Masakazu for a constant reminder. Forgetting whom your father is generally not something a kitsune does. Not that it really matters. Perhaps with a name like Kisho, he wont turn out a pigheaded as you."

"Why you bitc-"

"His name is Kisho."

"... Fine." The male grudgingly gave in. "But he can't just be called Kisho?"

"Well, what do you suggest? I doubt you'd like him named after the Noba clan..." The voices continued onwards, lilting back and forth, lulling Kisho into sleep. Against his mother he felt protected from the world, safe from the troubles of which he knew not of.

A little later he was woken by a soft touch to his head and opened bleary eyes, that were yet to truly see, to peer up through the darkness at his mother. Her soft voice floated down, talking not to him, but merely musing.

"So it's decided then... we'll call him Masakazu Kisho." The mother void kitsune bent down and nudged her offspring lovingly, whispering softly. "My little Kisho."

Kisho's Associates

~Friends, Rivals and Enemies~

Ren

Ren is an interesting playmate. The short tussle we had in the nursery was certainly fun, though I was so sleepy I can't remember much!

Isara

Isara is great fun! She's my fellow explorer. Thoguh she seems so... delicate. I'm afraid to tussle her. Oh well, at least I can give her licks. And eventually, when she's stronger, I'll give her a good pouncing.

Yae

Quiet and shy. But nice. I'll draw her out more soon.

Yori

I have not met Yori.

Mikana

I have not met Mikana.

Boreas

I have not met Boreas.

A little something

The entry that won me Kisho, here because I'm proud of it and because it gives a little insight into what my kitsune will be like in the future.

Quote:
The forest that morning was still, with no sound but the sighing of the wind... No sound at all, not counting the labouring breathing of a human as he toiled his way up the mountainside. Normally that wouldn't be much of a problem but this particular human was moving in a direction that if he were allowed to continue would end with him being at the Nogitsune's doorstep. That was generally not a good thing, even if the man had a weedy appearance and looked like a strong gust of air would knock him over. Those humans could be remarkably deceptive at times, and all of them had the tendency to gossip about things which could just be damn annoying. So in the object of Nogitsune safety, Masakazu Kisho, void kitsune, could not allow this wandering human to get any closer to home. It would be incredibly inconvenient, and someone would be bound to yell at him for it.

Kisho would admit to often being just as deceptive as humans were sometimes, as his constant jovial smile really didn't seem to fit the bill of a shadow using kitsune. Most creatures were generally of the mind that shadow controlling meant you had to be sullen and dark featured, which was just entirely false. Ok, well he could be sullen sometimes, especially when he was being reprimanded for falling asleep at his post, but on the whole he was a rather happy creature. The only 'shadowy-ness' about him was that little hobby of making humans fall off the edges of cliffs. It was just a little hobby really, and he didn't pick really big cliffs. So no harm done... right?

Tails twitching slightly, the kitsune leaned forward on his tree branch perch, watching as the human came ever closer. It wouldn't be too hard to deal with. Humans were very superstitious, and Kisho was quite surprised to actually see one travelling up the mountain. They tended to avoid this place religiously. Yawning slightly, he pondered over how he would rid this area of the human, and eventually just decided to go with an old favourite. Kisho had always been very proficient in his skills with shadow manipulation and illusion casting. Everything else he ranked rather low in, but otherwise he was proud of his abilities. Focusing once more on the advancing human, Kisho was quite delighted to hear him talking to himself.

"Just a little farther Masume, then we can have..." The rest of the conversation the man was having with himself was inconsequential to Kisho, who was fighting the impulse to do back flips after having learnt the fool's name. This was dream moment. Kisho was planning on scaring this guy so bad he'd not only never come back to the mountain but he'd leave the entire province as well. Biting back a chuckle, Kisho began to focus. Dead samurai or beautiful lady? Dead samurais are always fun. At his will the shadows darkened, becoming stronger and more frightening as they clung to the trees and bushes. The man stopped, his way suddenly blocked by darkness. Fright flittered across his features.

And now for the grand illusion.

Doing two things at one was a definite strain, and Kisho knew he'd need one hell of a sleep later, but it was all going to be worth it. Cracking his knuckles, the kitsune sat himself more comfortably in the tree. Under his command the shadows grew stronger, creating a dark yet unrecognisable form. Using this base, Kisho cast his illusion over the top. The man, Masume, who was already on the verge of falling over in fright, made a garbled noise in his throat as the figure of a dead samurai appeared in front of him. Although dressed in traditional samurai garb, that was as far as the resemblance to a samurai went. The skin of this warrior was as pale as rice paper, and where the eyes should be there were merely two dark holes. Arrows studded the chest, leaking red blood that contrasted shockingly against the colourless-ness of everything else.

Moving with the grace of a warrior, the samurai leant forward slightly into an attack position, his right hand moving to the hilt of the wakizashi. Opening dry lips, the samurai spoke in a soft yet commanding voice that travelled to Masume on the wind. "Leave here Masume. Leave this place and never return."
When the man stood stock still, as if he'd grown roots, Kisho laboriously prodded his samurai into action. The illusion moved from a warning stance into an 'I'm going to kill you if you don't get your a** into gear' one, his mouth opening to roar. "LEAVE NOW!" After that announcement it didn't take long for the weaselly Masume to scream piercingly, turning to run in the opposite direction. He sure was a fast little bugger for someone who'd been climbing up a mountainside with great difficulty a moment before.

Meanwhile an exhausted Kisho let his illusion and shadows die away, while trying to keep hold of the branch. It wasn't that he was too tired to hold on; it was just that he was currently in the grip of hysterical laughter. Eventually combined fatigue and amusement were a bit too much and the kitsune plummeted to the ground with a painful thump. He'd have a bruise there tomorrow, oh but it was worth it; that had been just too funny. Then, still sniggering lightly to himself, the void kitsune curled himself up into a ball and promptly fell asleep, his two tails falling across his body like a blanket. He would be found there five hours later, by some very annoyed adult kitsune, who would proceed, with much enjoyment, to dump a bucket of water over his head.
