What has happened . . . //

Le Intro . . .

It all started when she first smiled. Shane didn't know what to say. No one had ever smiled, or even looked at him before. Maybe it was because he wasn't good enough, he didn't understand.
" Hello," She said.
" Ehh..."
" My name's _________ What's yours?"

Shane's eyes flew open. The ceiling loomed above him, the broken lightbulb flickering feebly. He sat up. A dream about her again. He narrowed his eyes. Why would that happen? She was dead. Dead. And good riddence to monsters like her. But something ate at his stomach. He had forgotten her name. Was that such a bad thing? Were monsters worth remembering? He shook his head from side to side rapidly. Yes. Monsters weren't even worth a shred of thought. but she...

Azalie...

He swallowed. Dead. The girl was dead. Then why did he still miss her?

Azalie...
You promised me. You promised me you wouldn't die.
Then why did you go anyways?

He stood up, and stalked out of the house. It was times like these he really wished the man had hit him hard enough to make him forget everything.

Part II

The sun was setting in the far horizon, the sky splashed with the many colors of night and day. The partly faded moon was starting to shine, and the shadows starting to stretch longer and longer until they vanished into nothing. The park was empty of all people, except one boy. He was rather young, about twelve years old. Dark, dusty hair ringed his face, a little shaggy, and a little long, but it was not mullet-like. A scatter of bangs fell into his eyes, clinging to his lashes.

All the other children had left the park, and he sat there, all by himself. The swing was creaking lightly in the wind, and his toes barely traced the ground. The adults of the town regarded him as a monster, someone that should not be treated as high as dirt. So the children of the town could not play with him, and he was left alone.

Not too far away, just a couple houses down, a girl sat on top a roof. She had thick, dark hair that curled and coiled around her chin. Two longer locks on either side of her face were seperated by a variety of beads and long glass tubes. A light dusting of bangs circled her face. Her eyes were large, and were the color of rain. They changed color to her emotions, but usually stayed the same misty color.

Clouds grouped together, in large clumps. The air became still.

" It's going to rain...," The boy and the girl whispered quietly to no one in particular.

Part III

" You aren't going to find anything in there," Shane jumped, spinning around. His mouth hung open; his throat worked, producing a string of incoherent noises. Azalie smiled, kneeling down next to him," The trash is always emptied every day, because they don't want tramps like'n us running around their house. It ruins the image.

She laughed, but it sounded hollow...empty...

Shane heaved a heavy sigh, running his hands through his dusty locks. She was right - he knew she was. The people in the town knew nothing of humility.
" Azalie..."
" Hmmm?"
" We aren't going to starve, are we?" He tried to sound casual, like nothing was wrong, but there was a definate quaver in his tone.
" I don't know," The dark-haired girl sank down next to him," I really don't know...," Drawing her knees up against her chest, his friend sighed," The way our lives are going, future looks pretty bleak."

The two friends sat next to each other, watching the orange sun sink down, leaving nothing but a slim cresent of light.

Part IV - The New shtuff

Shane ran his fingers through her choppy hair, marveling its sleek softness. She was extremely protective over her hair - washing it every day. And forcing him to do so as well.

Outside the blue moon dangled in the iron gray sky, while stars and planets flashed and slowly revolved around the sky.

It was night, of course. If she was awake, he probably wouldn't have dared to touch her hair. Not if he wanted to keep all ten of his fingers.

He loved her glass beads, the only beautiful thing she ever had.

Azalie rolled over, and he found himself face to face with her, so close he could see faint freckles sprinkled over her nose. The blue moon cast an unearthly glow over her soft skin, cutting a shadow against her half-teardrop nose, throwing her fuller bottom lip out like she was pouting. That was when Shane noticed.

He noticed her heart-shaped face had grown thin over the days.

He noticed her collarbones gently jutted out from the base of her neck.

He noticed everything about her was slowly growing smaller.

Disappearing.

" Azalie ," He didn't understand why, but Shane grabbed her shoulders and shook her, his stomach plummeting," AZALIE!" Someone to his left shushed him, but he didn't care anymore.

" Wake up!" He hissed. Slowly one eyelid eased up, revealing pale green eyes.

" What?" Her voice was hoarse from sleep.

" Come with me," Shane grabbed her hand and pulled her from the thin shelter made of wooden boxes. The cardboard 'n wood floor felt rough and slippery beneath his bare feet.

" You're thin," His blue eyes drilled into hears, searching for an explination. Azalie sighed, rubbing one eye tiredly, trying to wake up.

" You are too," Azl gave him a small push on his shoulder, a weary smile turning one corner of her sly mouth upwards, like she had mastered half of the Mona Lisa.

" Not as thin as you are!" He was near shouting." You can't keep on giving your share to the kids!"

" Look, I know you're concerned," Azalie took his hands off her shoulders, and smiled at him, this time both sides of her mouth curling upwards," That's sweet, but the kids need more food than I do. I still eat - and the kids need their energy."

It was only her smile that made him weak, made him relent.

" Right . . . for the kids," His blue eyes stared at the ground for a moment. He didn't want to fight with her - he knew she would convince him in a second.
