A long red velvet carpet ran across the floor in the great hall. The carpet ran from a set of large oak doors to a throne upon a raised platform. All along the walls were large marble pillars, each etched with its' own intricate and beautiful design. At either side of the platform were large demons carved of stone. They both loomed ominously at the end of the great hall, as if guarding the throne.
Upon the throne sat a man dressed in the finest of cloths. His robes lined with jewels of all sorts, and a crown made of gold sat firmly upon his head. Though he appeared almost human, his eyes were a shade of blood red. His face seemed to be that of a great warrior, cold and hardened from the sight of so much death.
The large oak doors swung open on old hinges which produced a terribly loud noise. A short man with dark green skin scuttled his way in. He traversed the distance between the door and the throne hunched over, holding above him a tray. Upon the tray sat a single golden, jewel encrusted goblet. Once he had reached the platform, he made his way up in until he was at the mans feet. Still hunched over, he lifted the tray higher above him. His short arms seemed to strain a great deal simply to make the tray level with the throne.
The man grasped the goblet and lifted it from the tray. Once it was removed, he waved his hand, signaling for the other man to leave. He left the room in a similar fashion as to which he came, hunched over, but with the now empty tray at his side. As he did, however, sweat ran down his face. He wiped it away as he walked over the threshold and out of the hall. The large oak doors swung shut behind him. Their closing accompanied by the same loud noise as when they opened.
Once the short green skinned man had left, the other man lifted the goblet to his lips. Slowly, he drained the contents. After he gulped down the last bit, he placed the goblet upon the arm of his throne. He leaned back a bit in his throne and smiled. He looked out on the great hall. All of it was his and not just the hall. All that stood beyond the walls were his as well. He had ruled the land of the demons for many years now. All who had opposed him were dealt with swiftly and brutally. This was how he had stayed in power, killing those who spoke against him and trusting no one.
He let out a deep laugh at the thought all all he had done, but the laugh soon turned into a fit of coughs. A few minutes passed and the coughing didn't cease. He clutched this throat, trying to stop it, but to no avail. Beads of sweat raced down his forehead. He thought frantically for some source of these coughs. His red eyes rested upon the goblet at his side. They grew wide as the realization finally came to him. He let out one last haggard cough before his eyes rolled back into his head and his body fell limp.
All across the land, word spread of the kings death and his lack of an heir. This set into motion a power struggle that would divide the lands of the demons and pit clan against clan.
