Chapter 1: Tea time
With a table set in a very shaky airship way, the small private cabin became even smaller. Captain Silver, seated across the enchantress, simply passed his lieutenants two packages of sandwiches, then began serving the enchantress her afternoon tea. The teapot was surprisingly hot, considering the airship only had one stove to prepare refreshments for all of the long distance passengers. This usually meant only first class, since the halls passengers brought their own food.
Shin Mei took her teacup and smiled happily.
"Quite strong" she said after her first sip. "Lovely aroma, nonetheless"
"Yes, it is quite rare in these schedule flights" Silver said while re-assembling a fruit plate fallen all over the basket.
"It is nice of you to remember the vows of my order, captain" Shin Mei said after Silver passed her the plate and a small knife.
"Enchantress, we have escorted yourself and your fellow enchanters many times before this. I believe I have come to understand at least parts of your philosophy"
"Indeed you have, yet there are some men and women in his majesty's defense force, who have traveled with members of the order of Life for years and still find it difficult to remember our vows of not killing or taking advantage of anything which requires killing"
"Sad indeed. Much like the reasons for our latest meetings and travels"
"True. I hope this will be our last journey to the Weion region in some time"
"These long journeys must be hard on you, enchantress"
"Not as hard as the sorrow of knowing our efforts to bring understanding and peace to the region only lasts for such little time. The fighting these clans engage in seems pointless to them as well, yet they cannot give in"
"Being known as ambassadors and negotiators makes your order seem more like political magicians than healers" Silver said.
Shin Mei laughed. All three officers were part of the defense force, the portion on the kings army dedicated to protecting the country, and had escorted Shin Mei to many areas filled with conflict and miss-trust. Her order, being known to take no sides and work towards ending blood-shed, often needed soldiers to take the much needed pacifist-enchanters to sites filled with hostile people. Silver took this part of his duties very seriously and not just because he'd developed a friendship with the young enchantress.
After their tea was gone and the lieutenants had eaten their share, Shin Mei decided to focus on her book, the book of Life, the code and spellbook of her order. Bolen was still uneasy with the fact of flying, but with his stomach full of beef, bread and cheese, he simply closed his eyes.
"Fay, help me with this table" Silver said to his other lieutenant.
"What? We're not going to pass the time by playing cards or anything?" Fay wondered.
"You only play cards, if you can get your hands on Bolen's next paycheck" Silver pointed out and noticed Bolen falling deeper into his seat. Fay sighed and helped her captain slide the table back under his side of the cabin couch.
"So it takes four hours to get back to Mesan, and we have nothing to do but talk or sit. I wonder if any of the regular passengers would like to play" Fay said, partly to herself.
"From what I saw, the people in the passenger hall would be too scared of your uniform to even utter a single word, yet alone take you in their game of dice"
