Chapter 2: The archive
Lieutenant Tulan Fay pushed the archive rooms door with her shoulder and thanked whoever had forbit locked doors during daytime. With her hands full of report files, even picking up a piece of bread became a trial of balance. 'I'd like to see the trainees at home trying something like this.'
The archive room was a huge hall filled with dim light and heavy bookshelves. In front of it all was the heavy wood desk of the head clerk of these arcives. The head clerk, an old soldier nicknamed Bookie, had trouble remembering the names of everyone except for a few major generals but knew his archives inside out.
Fay placed her tall pile on Bookie's desk and took her bread bun out of her mouth.
”Escort reports from Weion region with the order of Life, observation reports from Weion region and travel expence reports from Weion to Mesan via Geran and Belan. Three copies each, defence force division 26”
Bookie peered through his thick, round glasses and touched the leather cases. He mumbled something Fay couldn't hear even in the hauntingly quiet archive.
”Alright, reports from Weion go to … and expences. Have these all been approved?” Bookie asked.
”Yes” Fay replied.
”And in three … all accounted for … yes, yes, files underway. This is all, yes?” Bookie sounded like he talked to himself most of the time. Most officers in Fay's position had grown a peculiar patience towards the old clerk.
”That is all for now. Good day” Fay said and turned to leave.
Suddenly a man with the yellow sash of a major rushed in.
”I need every file of information you have on the men assigned to Fort Calmday” the major said loudly.
Bookie peered at the man. Fay took a bite from her bread and moved closer to the door. She wanted to hear Bookie's reply.
”Fort Calmday? Every file you say? Sections 24, 28, 38 and 47, under Calmday. Be careful though, there's hundreds of files on forts”
”No, you old fool! I need the information regarding troops!”
”Troops now? Sections 1 through 22, but if the soldiers you're looking for are dead, I can't help you. Those are in the storage”
”Are you wasting my time?
”Hold on … um … major. Nellie, Vert, come here and see, what the major wants. Find him a big enough table. Oh, were you taking these to one of the major generals by any chance?”
”The file was requested by major general Plaemin”
”Do you have his signed request?”
The major gave Bookie a folded piece of paper.
”Oh, he wants the list of companies and other personel assigned to Fort Calmday” Bookie said after reading the paper. ”Why didn't you say so? Nellie, section 47, unit 36, under Calmday”
Fay finally left the archives with a wide smile on her face. Bookie was such a character.
