Barton Town
The sun beat down upon our backs as Gonzo and I trekked through the forest edge. "Tell me again why we have to travel through the wood and not the road?" Groaned my traveling companion as he managed to stumble over air. "Because." I replied curtly. " My hair attracted too much attention on the road where everyone can see me. " I sighed and turned around sharply when I heard a curse ring through the air. "What now?!" "I tripped...Please can we walk on the road? Please!" Heaving a heavy sigh I put my hair up in a pony tail and wrapped the grey shawl around my neck to disguise my appearance. "There," Gonzo whooped his happiness and ran out into the road, me trudging behind with an emotionless expression.
"Hey there’s a town a few miles ahead!" Gonzo exclaimed to me after reading a wooden sign that was poking up from the green grass. "I know." I stated dully, not looking at him. "I can read." "You can?" Ganzo's voice showed a bit of shock. "Yes, my elders taught me at a fairly young age. Where did you learn to read?" My voice was a bit lighter knowing that we could rest at the town a few miles ahead. "The thieves taught me. I don’t know that much, but I manage." The thief swirled one of his small daggers in between his fingers skillfully. I growled low and snatched it from his hands. "HEY!" "The last thing we need is more attention. Just walk straight and try not to cause a scene!" Gonzo grumbled something as she grabbed his dagger and tucked it in the strap at his boot.
The town was called “Barton” (not related to Gaia) And it was busy. I could barely see past the bustling villagers, all with full packages under their arms. There were more carriages being pulled by tired horses then I had ever seen. Infact, this was my first time at an actual villiage. My blood red eyes soaked up the scenery like a thirsty horse does water. Ganzo, on the other hand acted as if he had always been around these type of places. At one occasion, as I was discussing our stay at the “Russell inn” I spotted my traveling companion slipping the owners wallet into his pocket. After sending him a very angry look he slipped it back in it’s proper holding place and pouted in the corner as I discussed our payment. “How about my companion and I work in the stables in exchange for our stay?” The man, whoes name was Connor _______ rubbed his chin with one hand as he pondered my offer. “Have ye any experience with the horse kind?” I nodded strongly. “My friend and I have worked around horses our whole lives.” Ganzo snorted, he knew I was lying. But what else was I to do? I knew how to handle Horses, and I was sure he did too. If not it wasn’t a hard task. “Hmm.” The man pondered some more, his deep brown eyes twinkling as he thought. “Alright. You got yer’ self a dear young missy.” We shook hands in comformation of the deal. I always shook strongly and looked the opisate in the eye. It was a way of showing respect and dignity in ones self that I had always been taught to uphold. Maybe it was the pride I had inherited from my father. I wasn’t too sure at the time though.
Our room was small, an oil lamp resting silently on the wooden table in the corner near the white sheeted, for poster bed. Ganzo and I agreed that I would take the bed the first night and him the second. The day was still young so we both decided to go out on town to by whatever supplies we would need when we left for the road again in three days. “We start work tomorrow. So be ready and don’t stay out too late.” I re-toled Gonzo for the fourth time sence we walked out the doors of the Russell inn. “Ya Ya. Gimmie the money already!” I sighed and roughly handed him 15 shillings. “There, now don’t waste it. We only have 20 more.” His face twisted into a frown. “How come you get twenty and I only get fifteen!?” “You will get nothing if you don’t shut up! I am going to spend our money on supplies, you on the other hand will probably waste it on sweets!” He mumbled something incoherent. “Meet back at the room in two hours! No later okay?”
With a simple wave of his hand he was off. I looked back over my shoulder and raised an eyebrow. The little thief was already gone.. I shook my head and walked on through the little shops full of goods and supplies.
I spent three shillings on a pair of new leather water skins, and six on a new hunting knife sence I broke the other one when skinning a deer a few days back. I pocketed the rest and began to browse. I had a little over an hour left to browse the shops. I stopped and examined a small table with beautifully colored dresses hanging on a long rail. “You would look beautiful in this one miss.” Spoke the elderly women from behind the table. “ I…uhh no thank you. I have no money for such a garment.” She cocked one eyebrow and pulled down a simple plain white gown. The sleeves were transparent and the neck cut to show just the slightest bit of cleevage. “Surely you can appreciate this beautiful work of art..” I snorted. Never before had I considered clothes a work of art. “I have no money.” I stated again, this time my voice firm. “Here.” The elderly women pushed the knee high dress in my hands.” It’s been a while since I’ve seen a Lion demon, so consider this a gift. I stepped back in shock, the dress in my hands loosly. “H-how did you..” “Please deary, after all my years I know a Lion demon when I see one. Now run along, your holding up my shop!” I gave her a confused look but walked on, tucking the dress carefully in my pack.
That’s when I saw him. I looked up from my pack and came face to face with an angry, wide eyed black stallion, and it didn’t seem to happy to have me glaring back at it.
