Preview for Violin Story

“Wait, wait! Sir!” She ran after him, but tripped on the slippery cobblestone. She cried out as her knee met with hard stone and crumpled onto the street. “Sir… I cannot accept this!” She must have been a pitiful sight, dirty auburn locks matted and wet framing her face, while she sit on the wet ground. Her eyes swept the street for the man, but to no avail. He had gone as fast as he had come.
Glancing at the violin case, she sighed. It was unharmed from her clumsy fall, maybe just a scratch or two on the wooden case. The case was more valuable than anything she had ever owned in her entire lifetime that she could remember. Not that she owned anything other than the clothes on her back now.

But why…
She held the case close, smooth wood brushing gently on her shift. The rain was now a downpour, soaking through her shift and dripping slowly on to the wood. She cried out, wrapping the violin case and it’s contents in her shift, and began running. She had to get out of the rain for it might ruin the case and the violin! The cobblestone felt cold and hard on her bare feet as she ran, dodging the people left out on the empty street. It took her awhile to remember where she had made her home for the night. When she finally reached it she was wet to the bone and her chest was moving rapidly, the violin still clutched in her arms close to her heart.

Her so called home for the night was a small covered corner of a back alley. It was neither comfortable nor warm, but at least it kept her out of the downpour. There was no source of light, all the streetlamps had been turned off for the night to conserve energy and money. Had it been lit, it would have seemed worse of than it was in the first place anyway. A crescent shaped moon hung in the sky overhead giving off a little light for her to see by, but not much as she crawled towards her corner. With one hand she gently swept in front of her until she hit the hard corner of the wooden crate that was her shelter. Feeling around some more she felt the worn fabric of her only other possession, an old weathered blanket she had found recently and kept to keep her warm during the winter. Winter was going to be harsh this year, she just knew it. She’d have to find someplace before it came or she’d freeze to death. She shuttered, there was no denying the truth, but the more she thought about it the more she worried.

She lay the violin case down gently and laid next to her on the weathered blanket. The antique wood shone in the slim light the moon gave off through the rain, the drops of rain giving it a luminescent touch. She closed her eyes, hearing the beautiful sound of the violin in her head, notes flowing sweetly from bar to bar. She knew she couldn’t keep it. The violin could sell for a fortune, and buy her the clothes and food she desperately needed to survive the winter. Except…she wanted to keep it, learn to make beautiful music with her own hands. She had never created anything close to beautiful before, and now she had the chance. Would it be worth death though? Worth freezing to death? Forehead wrinkling in a mix of fear and wonder, she took the violin case back into her hands. This violin could mean her future…or demise.

Which would she choose?
