The Chemistry Mistress.
Chapter iii : The Friendly Orchestrians: Character Index

These are all of the orch-dorks that I consider my friends . I suppose I really love these people because it is a class where none of my regular friends that I hang out with everyday are there, so there are no expectations to live up to. In any case, I figured that I had better catalogue them for you, reader, to refer to whilst reading the rest of the future journal. There is not particular order to these, as I am not up to doing all of them right at this moment. I will do whichever I feel like doing at the time.

Name: Dan
Year: Sophomore
Instument: Cello
Relationship: Fellow Orch Dorch
Status: Developing Friendship

I do not know why I picked to write about 'Little Newbold Boy' first. I guess it is because he has a very unique personality. Dan, as a freshman, was well-liked by the 'core' of the orchestra. But, as he began to act like himself, he was not as much part of the group as he was. I praise him for accepting this. He is an odd kid, and enjoys making people uncomfortable. He has the best stare to make most people shudder. He has piercingly blue eyes that just make it all the better for him. I think he enjoys my company because I have yet to break to his stares or odd comments. I just strike back with my own. He likes to frustrate people, as well. Whenever someone suggests a measure in the music at which to start, he takes pleasure in suggesting one (or two) measure(s) before, depending on the day. I myself find amusement in this, but the first violins do not take too kindly to it. However, he showed me a small token of friendship today, asking me my opinion in the matter. This was startling to all present, as I am a measly second violin. No one listens to second violins.
He is our first chair cello, a huge position in our orchestra. He might need to be more assertive to take on the section leader role, especially as a sophomore. Also, the constant hounding of the overly-dramatic Kaileigh does not help him any.
In any way, Dan and I have a strange relationship. He has taken to sitting at my overcrowded table, and especially enjoys taking my seat if I have to go get something. So, we go from "I hate you"s to sitting on him.

Name: Derek
Year: Sophomore
Instrument: Viola
Relationship: He is my Freshman
Status: More Distant that I Would Like

Ah, Derek. I suppose I had better explain how a sophomore is 'my' freshman. Well, last year, he was a freshman. I recognized him from middle school, but did not really pay attention. I just thought he was another damn freshman. However, when the Orchestra Retreat rolled around, I noticed him more and more. He gave off an aura of suffocating loneliness. As myself, Kaileigh, and Kaileigh's mother sat around a splintered table, Kaileigh's mother pointed him out. She said something along the lines that if she heard there was a suicide at Saguaro, it would be him. Turning to them both, I told them that I would not let it happen. Kaileigh merely said "Good luck with that." So, returning from the retreat, I reached out, saying hello. But all I got was a look of 'why are you talking to me?' Discouraged, I had a moment where I considered it was not worth it. This was in September. I kept up the friendliness as much as I could. Finally he would say hi back to me near the middle of October. Finally, the Halloween concert arrived. I do not remember how, but I finally got him to sit with Vince, Kaileigh and I. Kaileigh and Vince left, probably to go suck each other's face off. But, I got Derek to laugh, commenting on our old Middle School conductor, who was there. Hah, mission accomplished! After that, I think he felt more comfortable, realizing that I wanted to be his friend. We talked online and text messaged a lot.
Then, there was a point last year where our friendship falters. I do not remember when that was, but I know that by the California Trip, I did not see him hardly at all. But, he had made new friends in the Orchestra. I do not like some of them, but if they are friendly to Derek, I will not be mean to them.
I feel a strange obligation to Derek. No one is to make fun of him without severe thrashing by me. I even got Lindsey to break up with a boyfriend because he was bothering MY freshman. Do not mess with the frosh. However, many people DO make fun of him. Namely Kaileigh and Lianna with the 'core'.

Name: Kaileigh
Year: Junior
Instrument: Cello
Relationship: Good, Good Friend
Status: Going Downhill, but getting better

Kaileigh has been a good friend of mine in sixth grade, then in eighth grade to the present. She is by far the most dramatic and wild out of all my friends. She has some pretty strong opinions on just about everything. She dated Vince for a whole year, a record relationship for her. While she was in this relationship, she was doing very well for herself. She drank rarely, and never did any drugs to my knowledge. But when that relationship ended, a new Kaileigh emerged, accompanied by 'whorish freshman' (now sophomores). She began to date Justin, but that did not last at all. She was not happy. But she hates being single, and throws herself at any male being she finds remotely attractive. And, not to mention the alcohol. But, I have backed off a little. If I see her doing anything that might get her off track any more than she is, I will have to interfere, and that will not be pleasant. She is a smart girl, but is more concerned with her hair than her grades. As a junior, she cannot afford to decide to go instate and slack off. I will not let her.
Despite her destructive behaviors, she is a good friend of mine, and I will look after her as long as she needs me to. She often objects to my voice of reason in her life. But, too bad for her. I am not one to give up easily.

Name: Vince
Year: Senior
Instrument: Violin or Viola
Relationship: My Really Good Friend's Ex-Boyfriend
Status: Surprisingly, really good friends.

Vince and Kaileigh dated for a whole year. He did wonders for her in her social behaviors, and kept her under control. But when they broke up, they both took hits for the worse. For a long time, I had to do a whole lot of convincing to get Vince to keep talking to me. He figured that just because my friend is too shallow to realize what she was losing, our friendship would not last either. In truth, because they broke up, Vince has felt more comfortable around me, because I was not always judging him as the guy who was dating my Kaileigh. Anyways, I enjoy having Vince as a friend. And the more I know him, the more I wonder why Kaileigh would let this one go.
