Your Mendel begins life confined in a test tube as a liquid, powder, or gas. It is in this seemingly innocuous tube that a complex series of chemical reactions starts to occur - even if it seems the powder never sifts or the gas never swirls, rest assured that your Mendel is growing and forming right before your eyes! Try not to think of them as inanimate objects, as Mendels in the Elemental stage are fairly aware of their surroundings even if they are unable to react to them. Be it a liquid, powder, or gas it is of the utmost importance that you do not, at any point, remove the stopper from your test tube. Doing so can introduce outside bacterium or chemicals into your Mendel's mixture, and it could end up having dire consequences on your Mendel. In summary: this is an extremely delicate and reactive stage, and it is only with your tender care that your Mendel will be able to progress to the next stage in its lifecycle.
At this point your Mendel has emerged from its tube, hopefully healthy and no worse for the wear! All Mendels are gifted with the ability to speak right from the tube, so early communication with your Mendel is encouraged as they may be a bit disoriented upon their initial arrival. You will soon discover that each Mendel has a unique personality and appearance, and it is your responsibility as a scientist and Guardian of a Mendel to take diligent notes on the development of your little experiment! The strengths and weaknesses of your Mendel will also become more apparent as time progresses. Also please be aware that we're extremely interested in seeing how Mendels interact with one another, so it is very important that you have them meet and socialize with other Mendels. Your Mendel's actions during this stage will likely effect their adult stage as well, be it physically, emotionally, or intellectually.
At last your Mendel has fully matured! Your Mendel is now an adult but please don't think that your Mendel has stopped developing; on the contrary, your Mendel is still in flux, as any adult would be. They are still of great scientific interest to the scientists at the Eyev Foundation, so it is important that you maintain your Scientific Log and have your Mendel continue interacting with others. Adult Mendels are also capable of being involved in a secret, complicated process known as "Elemental Refinement" which can lead to the creation of entirely new elements.

01 » Check the front page of the thread to find out when events are occurring. Please do not PM any of the employees of the shop asking when the next flatsale or auction will be.
02 » Flatsale Mendels will cost 30K. If you are selected as a winner but can't afford the cost all at once, please PM this mule and we will see if we can work something out for you.
03 » Mendel flatsales are writing-oriented. A prompt will be posted which an entrant will then have to respond to in a set amount of time, generally thirty minutes to an hour. Entries will then be judged on the creativity and quality of writing an entrant displays. Good grammar and spelling are other aspects that we will be looking for, but obviously we'll allow for a few errors here and there.
04 » The prompt(s) will be posted five minutes prior to the actual start of the flatsale. This is to allow you time to plan out what you will be writing. Once five minutes have passed this account will issue a "Go" post, at which point we will start accepting entries. Once the set amount of time has passed this account will issue a "Stop" post, at which point we will no longer be accepting entries. We'll allow for a three-minute forgiveness policy but entries submitted long after the "Stop" post will be disqualified. The entries we like best will be able to pick Mendels, with first place getting first choice, second place getting second choice, etc.
05 » Please keep the flatsale thread civil and friendly at all times. If you don't win a Mendel please be respectful and accept our decision - there will always be other opportunities to acquire Mendels!

How old is this shop? Where was the original thread?
Old! Mendels was created in early '04 and closed in early '05, a little after its first year anniversary. The original thread can be found here but unfortunately most of it is incomplete. All the images are missing and many of the links on the front page are now dead. However it's an interesting read if you ever have the extra time!
Can I bribe you for a mendel?
Artists may accept bribes in the future. If there is a "bribe option" open the artist will mention it in their personal corner, so I'd recommend keeping your eyes there for the time being.
Do you take commissions for a mendel? How much?
We will at no point ever be taking real money for Mendels. If you'd like to support our amazing, amazing artists, I'd recommend seeing if they are available for commissions off-Gaia!
When two Mendels breed, do they make a compound?
Not as such! Mendels don't "breed" but they do participate in a process known as "Elemental Refinement" which allows the extraction of their DNA and another Mendel's to be blended together with the secret concoction that starts the chemical changes that result in Mendels. The goal of the process is to create a brand new element, the likes of which the world has never seen! Of course mutations can always occur as well... For further information, please see the "Breeding" section! (When it's actually written. >> )
Are Mendels bonded to a specific guardian?
Mendels aren't really bonded to anyone or anything. They're free to leave the guardians if they so choose, but please be aware that the Eyev Foundation does have means of tracking their whereabouts, and will be most displeased to discover one of their expensive experiments going missing...
What about old Mendels whose owners haven't returned? What are you going to do with their Mendels?
Out of respect to the old owners of Mendels who made this shop so great with their amazing characters and roleplay, we will not be rehoming old Mendels. Rather it'll just be assumed that, much like real life, the Guardian has left Gaia and taken their Mendel with them. However the Eyev Foundation has no problem using these elements over again to make brand new Mendels!
How big are Mendels?
While there tends to be great diversity in the heights of Mendels, one thing remains constant: they're all pretty tiny. Rarely will you ever see a Mendel grow over eleven inches, and even then the average height for an adult Mendel is probably somewhere between seven or eight inches. Since the elemental samples used to create them are so small it only stands to reason that the Mendels themselves are rather small as well!
Can I pick my own element?
As a general rule of thumb all flatsales, auctions, and raffles will be offering a preselected element. In the future we may offer events that allow people to choose their own elements, but for the time being it's safe to say that the majority of events will already have their elemental offerings predetermined.
How do Mendel personalities work?
Unless you are customizing your own Mendel, your Mendel will have a predetermined appearance and personality. Generally this personality will consist of four to five traits describing your Mendel. It's up to you as a roleplayer to expand on these traits and give your Mendel a vivid, unique personality, while still keeping its core persona intact.
Why are they called "Mendels"?
Dmitri Mendeleyev was a Russian scientist who first organized all the elements into a table - what we know today as the Periodic Table of Elements! The Mendels are named in his honor, and since "Mendeleyev" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, we went ahead and shortened it a little. It's also a slight nod to Gregor Mendel, the father of modern genetics.
